slice-of-life

Then you can definitely erase Girls' Last Tour, K-On, Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun, The Demon Girl Next Door, and maybe Tokyo Mew Mew New from the list I posted before. TMM has some action scenes (it's a magical girl anime) but it also has a lot of slice-of-life stuff too. The others are just plan old slice-of-life anime.

then again madoka magica didn't really appeal to me either.

What exactly didn't you like about it? I know you said "it's hard to explain" so you don't have to go further if you don't want to. I'm just trying to help you out, and knowing what you tend to like or not like would help me give better recommendations.

I think my favourite series tend towards thriller/noir (Stuff like Noir, Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom, etc). I like action but not shonen in general, and don't really go for comedy unless I'm in the mood for it (example: Daily Life of High School Boys was fucking awesome when i watched it, but now i'd probably not enjoy it as much). I am a sort of Fate nerd, but not the hardcore type that thinks that anything that isn't the VN is trash.

Something with a coherent story is also a plus.

Check out Needless, Promised Neverland, and Unbreakable Machine Doll (if they still have the rights to it).

They lost the rights to Squiddy which is a drag :(

Based on that, I think the shows you'd like the most from the list I posted are Kaiji, Princess Principal, The Executioner and Her Way of Life, and maybe Yuki Yuna Is A Hero. All 4 of them have darker aspects, great action, and a lot of twists and turns in their stories.

I say "maybe" for Yuki Yuna because it has a lot in common with Madoka Magica (both are basically about magical girls who didn't fully understand what they were signing up for and suffer severe emotional trauma because of it) but this one has more of a focus on action and character drama rather than the more psychological drama that Madoka had. It might be more enjoyable for you, or you might dislike it for similar reasons. You never told me exactly why you disliked Madoka, so I figured it might be worth a shot.

I dunno if they're on HDDrive, but I'd recommend (based on the shows you like):

it just seemed pointlessly dark for me.

i don't mind dark if there's moments of light or ends on a light note. but soul-crushingly dark straight up doesn't appeal to me

EDIT: oh hey they have the Tsukihime anime.

i should watch that with my Type Moon nerd friend

Watched the first episode of The Witch from Mercury and between the prologue and that, think I've found the first series I'll actually watch during its broadcast in years. Really excited with what it is doing so far

I watched the prologue and loved the way they did it. I'm happy to hear the first episode continues that; don't have time to watch it today, but I'll definitely check it out tomorrow.

Witch From Mercury has been really good so far. I never expected a Gundam series to take inspiration from Revolutionary Girl Utena of all places, but they've made it work great.

It doesn't really have the same feel as the prologue, don't go in expecting the same thing yet anyways. However, I think the prologue served to set what the tone of the show will become.

It's not worth getting as your only anime streaming service since it doesn't have nearly the library that Crunchyroll has, but if you already have Crunchyroll and want more anime that Crunchyroll doesn't have, HiDive is the 2nd-best service out there to have as a secondary alongside Crunchyroll. It's pretty cheap (only $5 a month) and has a lot of anime that Crunchyroll doesn't, including niche titles and a lot of older anime too.
Now that Crunchy plus Funi isn't a thing, Hi Dive is the go to "other anime service" to grab.

Chainsawman was great! Fantastic art and great pacing that almost immediately makes the MC likable. My SO watched it and started reading the manga right after.

I watched Eminence in Shadow, but the first episode was a giant let down compared to the manga. Hopefully the second episode leans more heavily on the humor.

Blue Lock was ok. The animation was interesting, but the pacing feels weird. People have been complaining about the premise, but the faster you accept that it's a romcom the happier you'll be.

Exactly. The Crunchyroll/Funimation merger means you don't have to pay for them separately anymore, so you can put that money towards HiDive instead to get even more anime. It's great.

Mob Psycho episode is 2 was great. Looks like this season will live up to the hype if it keeps up.

Eminence in Shadow episode 2 was better, showing how delusional the MC is. I think the manga is a bit better than the anime, if you care. In the anime, he kind of fills in his chunibyo role and owns it. In the manga, it's clear he's a parody and has a more exciting personality compared to other isekai.
