Por que no me gusta Espanol hermano. Also I found it more complicated to speak than English so I never really wanted to put in the extra effort to learn how to read and speak Spanish fluently. America and a lot of people who help run it are ignorant and racist as fuck anyway so not being able to speak it isn't a huge downside. On the bright side I can say I've never been on the opposite end of a "This IS America, speak English!!!" racist rant.

My mom wasn't allowed to teach me or my brother Spanish because my dad isn't Spanish. A lot of racial tension between the families when I was a baby, I assume it's because my dad would feel left out for not speaking Spanish or thinks that if we switch to talking that language we're talking about about him behind his back.

If you're not from a country where it's the primary language, no reason to expect to be able to speak it. I'm sure very few Americans with European heritage can speak the languages other than English.

Don't do that, that's how he grew up absorbing the language, it's not his fault. Probably a failure on the mom for not emphasizing pronounciation at a young age. I know my mom used to make me go through pronunciation books to avoid this exact issue. [Still speak like a "gringo" in PR with my family, but not blatant enough around normal people.] I'm thankful, but I know not everyone gets this kind of education. Some are lucky enough to just learn it from incidental speaking around the household.

This sounds like some self hate shit to me. Like living knowing only spanish, being a worker and harassed for only knowing spanish and not speaking english. You internalize that so much you teach your kids only english. Happened to my dad at least. I'm glad my mom taught me.

My mom was Mexican and my dad was from India. Although my mom fully spoke Spanish, and my dad Urdu/Hindi, they pretty much spoke English only in the household, just as a common language.

Cousins on my moms side would tease me and my brother about not speaking Spanish and would call us coconuts. So Ive always been self-conscious about it. I would really like to learn more than the smattering that I know these days, but also realize just how much of a time commitment that is and keep putting it off.

In more recent years, after DNA testing, Ive became aware that of my 50% Mexican side, over 40% of that is indigenous. More specifically, some of the nomadic Chichimec peoples that never fully ventured south into the Valley of Mexico along with the Mexica (who would eventually be known as the Aztec). I started realizing my native language was maybe not Spanish, but Nahuatl. None of my immediate family speaks it (or even really acknowledges their indigenous roots), but Im pretty sure I still have relatives in rural Mexico that speak Nahuatl and no Spanish.

There are still a lot of Nahuatl speakers in Mexico, but I did recently see a YouTube video where some guy went to Mexico City and tried to find someone who spoke Nahuatl. And there, in the heart of old Tenochtitlan, he could only find one person.

So while I would still like to become fluent in Spanish, I find it kind of ironic that it is treated as a native language when in reality it is just as foreign a language as English was to the indigenous peoples living in what became the United States.

If I could go back in time 500 years and tell my ancestors that the strange language of the newly arrived, bearded conquerors of the Mexica would come to dominate the land, so much so that their descendants would exclusively speak it, theyd look to the sky and say: Quenin ah nichocaz in tlaticpac?

I know some people who were raised like that because their parents were subjected to racism so Americanizing them and speaking English in the house would not only help the parents with learning but it was the safer way to grow up. I'm sure there are other reasons obviously that's just one of the reasons I've heard.

I didnt know that was a thing (the term coconut). It sounds dumb since many Latin Americans have light skin.

I dont see a reason not to know a second language, its a handy thing and you never know when you might need it.

it is also odd how Hispanics from some places such as California or Miami still know Spanish, while most Texas Hispanics basically try to bang their heads with a shovel to see if they can forget Spanish.

My mom only speaks Spanish, it was the first spoken language I ever learned. By the time I went to kindergarten the teachers told my dad that they wouldn't accept me unless he only spoke to in English only. No ifs or buts, that whole school year I wouldn't be able to attend unless my dad made sure that I understood a little bit of English and from that point on my dad never spoke to me Spanish.

I was legit put in ESL classes to "catch up in English" and from that point on my Spanish became butchered because having to learn two languages simultaneously was too much for me and I ultimately HAD to learn English because that was requirement for my entire academic run for elementary school. I stopped getting ESL classes immediately once I went to middle school because my had English improved enough to void those ESL classes... I had a few friends that ONLY spoke Spanish, but that was never enough to improve my Spanish speaking capability. By the time I was in highschool I took a basic Spanish and I still managed to fail AP Spanish towards the 12th grade...

Overall I never became completely fluent in Spanish, I can speak enough Spanish to get by... I can even read and write in Spanish because of the Spanish classes I had but my Spanish is still at a elementary level and I never got beyond that and probably never will because I don't really see the need to be fluent in Spanish anymore.

Me and my sister were just talking about how annoying it is when white people come up to us and try to prove something by pointing out that they know spanish and we don't. It's funny too, cause they usually know a gradeschool amount and have this weird prideful feeling about it. If only they knew how corny and ignorant they looked lol

It's cool, if you know Spanish. It really is an accomplishment to be bilingual. But the act of needing to rub it in Hispanic people's faces who don't care to learn is very suspect. And again, it's always the people who only know a gradeschool amount. I feel like people who learn more actually have the depth of thought to realize how poor taste this is.

Congratulations on being an asshole?

What's next, are you going to start demanding to talk to a manager so you can ask them why many of us don't speak Spanish?
Why don't you make multiple topics on this board asking American born individuals, who only speak English, who have ancestors from Italy, France, Germany, Japan, Sweden, China, Russia, India, The Democratic Republic of Congo, etc, etc, etc, why they don't speak another language other than English and see how that goes.
