An AI can't meaningfully interact with culture and as such can neither absorb that nor contribute to it as it is merely a tool that does all the work and as such can't even be compared to brushes or the like

That's debatable. At the very least, it certainly isn't the case that it is art you made, not in the sense that a painting or drawing would be anyway. It's like you get a free Fiverr artist to try and draw or paint what you want. It could be the basis for something cool like a collage or giving you new ideas to try out, but it isn't be default yours in the same sense a drawing or sculpture might be.

That is not settled case law anywhere in the world. There was one case that involved AI art, and now everyone acts like they know for sure how it will be regarded legally. It's too soon to tell how governments and courts will react to this new technology.

I don't know which one created the opening post specifically, but the big three are currently Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and Novel AI (if you want anime or furry characters). Novel AI also does story generation which can be a lot of fun. Stable Diffusion is free and you can even run it locally if you have a powerful enough PC (you need a good chunk of RAM to run the slow CPU renders, and something like 6GB+ of VRAM for fast renders). Midjourney is a paid service, but you can use it a few times on Discord for free as a sort of trial. Novel AI costs money.

Well...it's not great? AI is coming for everything: drawing, painting, 3D modeling, music, hell even coding. And soon enough machines will be able to replace basic physical labor too.

Not until they consistently knows how many toes feet have (and fingers for hands). I get stuff where it puts like 8 toes on each foot.

Though I'm surprised it even got this sort of shot at all. Both Stable Diffusion and DALL-E 2 likely would have blocked it (I suppose you could also download the unrestricted Stable Diffusion).

AI art's been a pretty cool tool for me in my commission and study work~ It's a whole great avenue for development.

I've seen a lot of artists that use AI art to help them with their own drawings by getting poses and compositions down. AI art feels extremely lifeless though so I imagine most up and coming artists won't feel too threatened over AI replacing them. The big stink that a lot of artists have over the AI art is the AI scanning all their works without their permission.

it's only going to improve. i remember seeing 15.ai when it started out. it will go by leaps and bounds.

If you go pick out an artist on Fiverr and send him/her $10 and a prompt, did you create the artwork or did the Fiverr artist? If you'd like to argue that the amount of effort put into "prompt generation" is a factor, consider a more detailed scenario. You'd like a landscape painting for your home office, so you contact a local painter and explain what you want and ask for quote. The painter sends you some thumbnail sketches and you select the you like best. The painter paints the picture. You are unsatisfied with certain details, and you ask them to touch up the painting. Are you an artist or is the painter an artist? Did you make the painting, or did the painter make the painting?

You do not become an artist because you type "spaghetti made of flesh in watercolor" into a box and wait for a painting to pop out any more than you become a mathematician by typing your homework into Mathway. It can provide inspiration or help you get past a creative block, or maybe even be incorporated into some further work.

Sure but people aren't blowing their loads over garbage human art like they are with garbage ai art. Most of this stuff looks like something you'd scroll past immediately on deviantart or worse because it looks significantly more soulless.

There were chess players confidently proclaiming that computers would never be as good at chess as human grandmasters when the first generation of chess computers were made, too.

The level of AI visual art we're seeing today was unthinkable a year or two ago. You'd have to be a real doofus to think that there won't be leaps and bounds improvements in the coming years, much less decades. At the very least, the concept art industry is going to get gutted in the next decade.

And I stressed visual art above, as musical art has already had an active AI scene for years, and that's being improved and iterated upon rapidly as well. I'd guarantee that we've all listened to AI-generated music and not realized it.
