Notably, the game was supposed to have one more subgame--"Kagero Mansion"--where Kirby's mouth was sealed shut, rendering him unable to inhale enemies, fly, or even eat food, and he had to progress using items based on copy abilities. But it was cut for time and resource reasons.

Spring Breeze was also originally intended to not have the ability to use Copy Abilities at all, but a Nintendo executive demanded that Sakurai include them. He feels that it works better without them, perhaps to more capture the feeling of the original Kirby's Dream Land that it was a remake of, but also that he outright says that nothing really sets it apart from the following subgame Dyna Blade.

The game's 2-Player co-op feature also came about because Miyamoto asked for it; Miyamoto wanted to include it in a Mario game, but felt that Mario was too fast-paced for it, and thus felt that Kirby's slower pace would be perfect for it. While Sakurai agreed, they had since added Copy Abilities to the series with Kirby's Adventure, and some of the abilities made Kirby move extremely fast. His solution was to have main and support roles, with the camera focusing on the main role (Kirby), while the supporter would warp to Kirby's position if they got left too far off-screen.

That mansion game sounded interesting. Too bad it didn't make the cut.

This is probably my third favorite SNES game behind Mega Man X3 and Link to the Past. I played it to death, multiple times. The drop-in/drop-out Co-Op was genius and so much fun to play around with. My brother and I spent hours just dinking around in the Great Cave Offensive, searching for treasures and fighting bosses. Experimenting with different powers...

There's so much depth to so many of the abilities. It's insane how much thought went into this game. Almost every copy ability has a whole fighting game character's worth of moves attached.

They really struck gold with Super Star. Super Star Ultra remains my favorite in the series (though Planet Robobot gives it some very stiff competition).

Thank you for linking this, TC!

I feel like if Sakurai was the one heading up development of the remake, then it likely would have been added. Going by his work on Smash, he seems the type to try to implement an idea or concept again if it didn't work out the last time.

Thought they'd include the scrapped concepts in the DS port. Maybe next time?

Sakurai probably had the full details of that scrapped subgame, and he was uninvolved with the remake, so that's likely why it wasn't revisited.

Plus, all of the new subgames are just harder versions of existing subgames.
