OSHKOSH, Wis. (WLUK) -- Busing was unavailable for students in the Oshkosh Area School District Thursday after catalytic converters were stolen from buses overnight.

In a letter sent to parents, the district says Kobussen Buses Ltd. had all of the catalytic converters stolen from its entire fleet of buses in Oshkosh.

Jessica Kortbein says her son takes one of those buses to school every morning.
"Busing is the number one means of transportation for these kids, especially in my area," said Kortbein.

Kortbein says she has the ability to bring her son to school, but not all parents are lucky.
"It's not just stealing a catalytic converter, it's creating problems for parents getting to work on time and risk losing their jobs," said Kortbein.

Classes are still in session, the district says, so students will have to find a different way to get to school and home.

I might understand one bus getting it stolen off of it

But the entire goddamned fleet?

Put that dude behind bars for life. Or save us the money. Don't fucking care.

they caught one of many sun bitches trying to hijack all the catalytic converters in portland. they're worth so much money but it inconveniences people.

unfortunately i cant speak of a way in which i hope the converter thief suffers because of the TOS.

Some fancy and essential part for a car, but the reason they're worth so much is that they're made with some valuable metals that junk shops and scrap shops and a few other businesses like that will buy them up just to get the metal. Thing is, they're really easy to snap off for the people in these rings going out and stealing them.

they need to pass laws to prevent this.

Either make every single cat have a registration on them or ban scrap yards from taking them or the catalyst.

And they need to commit routine inspection of scrap and junk yards and if any catalytic converters are found on the property (not attached to a vehicle naturally) then the yard/shop owner needs to go to prison for years.

Make it too fucking toxic to even sniff a catalytic converter

Its not actually an essential
part and you can even drive around after having it removed.

Its essentially a muffler.

Yeah, I possibly damaged mine driving over something last week and my friend informed me it's something you'd rather damage than anything else your car "needs"

It's the appendix/spleen of the car

I work in the hood and we have them stolen from the parking lot pretty regularly.

Yep catalytic converters are on cars by government mandate, not because they're part of the propulsion or breakage or steering.

Honestly the problem is how easily accessible they are. We have a security guard driving around a relatively normal sized parking lot. And thieves are able to steal them with ease.

If you have a car, you probably won't have it stolen. Thieves are inherently lazy and will target an SUV or Truck where the catylitic converter is easier to access.

Wow, your boss is one of the good ones I guess. Scrap yards 'round here buy them up without a question. Yeah, it's pretty suspicious when some tweaker shows up with 14 detached converters but nobody cares if there's money to be made.

Yeah, we had the same happen to our company vans a while ago despite the vans being behind a security fence.

Simple. Make it so that you can only sell them if they are removed from the vehicle right on the scrap yard. Plus you have to have the vehicle paperwork. Thats what my state did.

In Georgia it varied county by county.

The county I was in didn't require inspections at all, but the Atlanta-Metro counties definitely did

no it's not just loud, it's LOUD. and horribly smelly. it's not how a vehicle should drive on the road, especially not in a city.

It's so fucking loud. I had an old beater Honda when I lived overseas when I was younger, and the fucking thing just rusted out and shit the bed when I down shifted to pass a guy. The car ran fine after but it was insanely loud until I got a replacement.

Because, the damn thing is placed right before the muffler, instead of tucked up into the exhaust manifold where it would be harder to steal and more useful anyway.

It impedes exhaust flow, and just ends up getting stolen anyway.
