Panic at an Indonesian soccer match after police fired tear gas to stop brawls left 129 dead, mostly trampled to death, police said Sunday.
Several fights between supporters of the two rival soccer teams were reported inside the Kanjuruhan Stadium in East Java province's Malang city after the Indonesian Premier League game ended with Persebaya Surabaya beating Arema Malang 3-2.
The brawls that broke out just after the game ended late night Saturday prompted riot police to fire tear gas, which caused panic among supporters, said East Java Police Chief Nico Afinta.
Hundreds of people ran to an exit gate in an effort to avoid the tear gas. Some suffocated in the chaos and others were trampled, killing 34 almost instantly.
More than 300 were rushed to nearby hospitals to treat injuries but many died on the way and during treatment, Afinta said.
He said the death toll is likely still increasing, since many of about 180 injured victims' conditions were deteriorating.
The Indonesian top league, BRI Liga 1, has suspended games for a week following the match, and an investigation had been launched, the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) said.
There have been previous outbreaks of trouble at matches in Indonesia, with a strong rivalry between clubs sometimes leading to violence among supporters.

one of the things I hope never happens to me is being trapped in a stampede, due to how out of control they can become. just the idea of a huge group of people losing control and panicking is really scary.

Indonesia seems like a strange and dangerous place. When they have tsunamis and all that, the death toll is much higher... :(

Eh I'd blame it on the cops here. The article says some people were fighting and the cops shot tear gas at them, which caused a panic.

Soccer is a religion in many countries. Americans do not realize just how fucking obsessed other countries are. Its like THE ONLY SPORT in much of the world

Reminds me of the Heizeldrama, where a bunch of football supporters went to pick a fight with other supporters, which eventually lead to a wall collapsing and killing a bunch of people.

i literally never watch a single soccer game, on TV (well excluding when someone watched soccer in the same room) or real life.

i am neutral toward soccer and sport in general, but man some fanbase are absolute troglodytes.

Theres a video of the tear gas in the stands. That amount of tear gas seems.. excessive. Especially since the field had already been more or less cleared

I've seen a news report say that the stadium was filled 4000 over max occupancy. Or at least that 4000 tickets over max occupancy were sold

So I read through this a bit, apparently this was their first home loss in the last 23 meetings against this particular team, and the fans began storming and attacking team management because they lost in their home arena, throwing glass bottles and whatnot trying to break through. The police then fired tear gas into the areas where the people were fighting to break through, sending people to the exits and resulting in the suffocation and trampling deaths of all of those people.

I don't know how violent they get, if they would have hurt or killed team management if they got there. It says they aren't even allowed to have visitor fans because of the fighting and violence it causes, and this seems like a very heated local rivalry that people passionately care about.

Reminds me of that incident in Mexico recently when the attendees were killing each other and people were ripping jerseys off their kids to avoid the violence.

most of the casualties are actually not from the riots.
some idiot cop fire off tear gases to the spectator tribunes, and people running panically into the exit. unfortunately, the exit are very small and hence the stampede that kills over a hundred people.

That seems like slightly too many deaths for a sport game
