Jurassic Park immediately sprung to my mind. First movie is a wonderful popcorn flick with intensity. The next two were okay.

The new series, as far as Im concerned, is downright awful.

How would it not be a franchise? It spawned 5 movies and 2 TV series as well as a cartoon series and an anime movie. It's way more of a franchise than nearly everything else posted in this topic.

It also qualifies because all of it after the original film ranged from mediocre to "one of the worst things ever put on film".

The pacing more or less matches the book. Arguably the pacing is slightly better than the book because the book has a lot of extra shit that can be boiled down to "nothing happens" like the Mercer VR sequences.

Yeah it definitely feels like a completely separate property up until Ford shows up. And only feels connected because Ford is in it.
