Kiwami 2 is incredible but then you have to go back to older gameplay for 3 remake which is kind of a slog. I've been playing through the series starting at 0 around 2 years ago. It's still a decent game, but for me it's probably the worst Yakuza game I've played so far (I haven't played 3 yet but I also heard that is subpar too) The devs themselves even kinda acknowledged that Kiwami was just a budget game to bring the antiquated entries more in line with the modern series, and I think it was kind of a side project while they were working on 6 and didn't put as much care into it. They sold Kiwami at $30 when it was released because of that. They tried to have their cake and eat it too and it ends up suffering a bit for it. The trademark tonal juxtaposition of melodramatic yakuza grit and wacky yakuzie fun times comes off far more forced in this game. Majima is a prime example, because the scenes in which he appeared in the original story carry menace and tension, but all of that evaporates once you engage in Majima Everywhere stuff, where he's a complete goofball. But there's other stuff, too. You can tell pretty easily, for example, which substories were from the original Y1, and which are new to Kiwami. Now it felt like they changed the narrative to Kiryu and Majima being longtime BFFs and Kiryu wanting these fights to improve his dragon style.
