It's Canberra apparently. I have literally never heard of this city in my entire 30 years of living. What the fuck

Yeah a few countries have capitals that arent what Id expect. Tanzania, Nigeria, New Zealand, Brazil, and Canada.

Fun thing to try: Open Google Maps and without using the search function, try to find the capitol of South Dakota.

I mean, the US could fall under this as well if it wasn't so ingrained in world culture.

You could ask random people what the capital is, 4 out of 5 would say Sydney because of the 2000 Olympics

Because, yes, the capital is not always the largest or most well known city of the country, nor is the government (what you could call the capitol) always located in the capital.

yeah, I thought it was Sydney forever, and when someone told me it wasn't, I guessed Adelaide. Hadn't heard of Canberra until a few years ago.

Canberra is quite a bizarre place, like in the way the city is laid out. I don't really know how to describe it. I like going there as a tourist but would get bored living there. However the wildlife is nice and it's an easy place to cycle around.

I live in Sydney and there's just so much more in every other city than in Canberra. Canberra is quite possibly the most boring capital city in the country, and I've spent some time in Hobart which has a pop. of 206k (Canberra has almost 400k).

There's only three reasons to be living there. Questacon, you've just been hired in a Government/public sector role, and you were born there.

Questacon is an interactive science and technology centre. It was almost a customary field trip excursion for primary school students in Sydney, but not sure if that's the case now.

Idk about this one, I mean yeah anyone without a clue about the US may assume NYC. But maybe weve just had American culture rammed down our throats so long I cant imagine not knowing about Washington DC

I've known that since I learned it in school last century. Many state and country capitals are not what we would expect.

I have an issue with how the locals pronounce* the name of their town, which also happens to be a constellation named after Greek myth. I may have gotten into an argument with a local woman about it when I worked as an operator.

Thank the gods.

The woman on the other end of the line was quite insistent on the other way. Got really upset when I pointed out the Greeks had been pronouncing it correctly for more than the past two thousand years, she was less then pleased.
