It's 2022, we've been through the "zoom meeting" renaissance. You need to be able to be heard. "Sorry, I'm using a ____" is no longer an excuse, it's just being lazy and/or not giving a damn. There are far too many people, who rely on audio or video calling, that have terrible mic's.

And for the love of god, when recording something (podcast/lesson/lecture/seminar/etc), test your sound before just connecting.

I should say: It doesn't need to sound like a recording studio, it just need to be clear, and not drop out. Lose the laptop default microphone. It won't break the bank to get something that works.

I'm pretty happy with the FM-2 preset on the G-Hub software for my Logitech G733 headset. Now that I think about it though, the vast majority of people have garbage mics in my experience. I've had a few jobs where training and meetings were all done remotely and the company provided a headset, so there was no excuse.

I would say most people who have audio problems are not because the mic is bad but because they have too much other noises getting in the way

can you say this for sure? i.e., have you tested yourself (and not just the little in-video-chat test, but an actual audio check)

my laptop mic is absolute trash. most on laptops <$1000 are.

I've listened to recordings that had myself talking in them, if that's what you mean

Played halo with friends last night and one has this shitty old busted headset. The mic is clearly shot on it. But he thinks its fine because "i can hear you!". Then complains that we never reply to him --- no one can hear him clearly!

These are smart guys. How are they so dumb when it comes to audio setups.
