I can't really get behind the "oh Republicans have always been this way" angle and feel it's just another minimalization. There's definitely a malevolent edge to them that's broadened its scope to larger and larger swathes of the population as 'deserving' of some sort of retaliation in the last few years.

The only thing that changed is that Trump showed them they can be upfront about their views without tanking their electoral chances. That's it.

GOP was always garbage. They just wore reasonability as a disguise.
