I remember a pastor trying to bully my mom into going back to church when we were at a gas station one time. It was a really weird interaction.

I think some religious advocates can bear helpful and ethical wisdom.
However, I don't believe it's something innate to being religious or specific religions.

Wise people from experience are typically the bearers of cultural wisdom because they can often see who needs it. Religion can help in that prospect when spoken responsibly. However, religion can also just as easily be used to excuse tyranny in the name of moral sanctity (a historically common practice in many different early belief systems). Religion, in my opinion, is not innately wisdom or righteousness. It's a tool. And tools can be used for both support or harm depending on the wielder.

I don't find a religious person wise and honorable because they practice religion. I see them as a wise and honorable person who happens to practice religious beliefs.

I definitely see a person who literally sacrifices/dedicates their life to being an ethical and upstanding person differently than just a run of the mill wise person.

There's no guarantee a teacher will be good with children.

And there are plenty of people aren't teachers who are this kind of person.

So what point is that supposed to make?

On average, they ARE that type of person.

Lmao no.

When I was 19 I was dating a girl whod started getting back in touch with her religious upbringing and at the youth group i agreed to go to with her there was a lesbian girl...

The same youth pastor who endlessly preached acceptance straight up told her when she admitted she was gay to the whole group that "it won't be held against you if you choose to live in the light of God and renounce your sins."

Fuck right off with this bs.

Prayer is a form of meditation, if its a pastor that honestly believes in what hes doing then hes probably spending a lot of time thinking about whatever situations need prayer, so yea it makes sense they would often have good input regardless of who/how they credit the information.

Not every Christian pastor is like that. I was brought up Methodist and when the pastor of my church had his daughter's girlfriend wind up homeless he offered her a place to stay until she could find somewhere else to live.

A religion as big as Christainty isn't going to have cookie cutter religious leaders that all fit into one neat little pigeonhole. You can't just focus on the bad that comes from a religion and ignore the good because it's inconvenient to your POV.

The ones that are most popular/famous and become powerful tend to be evil as fuck though. Like any sort of position of power, it corrupts pretty damn easily or has people who are evil want to take said position of power.

It seems fair to focus on the bad if that's a core tenant of the religion or denomination? i.e. "Wives always obey your husbands" "Homosexuality is a sin and should be punished"

In most branches of Protestant Christianity that tends to vary on church by church basis. Some churches are very progressive and think that Jesus and his teaching to love one another is supreme and anything that counters that message should be disregarded. Others dwell on that crap from Leviticus and the like and should be condemned for it.

Agreed, but doesn't that mean you *should* focus on the bad in some denominations? And such focus is not just "because it's convenient to my POV"?

I don't go to church anymore, but we had this great pastor when I was younger. He would always give an interesting sermon and was such an easy guy to talk to. Whether an atheist or Christian the man wouldn't treat you with any disrespect or look down on you. Sadly he got transferred and we got a dude who was a snoozefest and was not nearly as open-minded afterwards.

I do think most I've come across have given great advice though.
