You are what your record is. If you're a piece of shit during life then it's not a surprise when people discuss it when you're dead. It's nobody else's fault but the deceased when people aren't left with anything nice to talk about.

What I do believe though, is not saying anything about a dead person that you didn't have the guts to say while they were still alive.

Only if the figure was in fact a terrible person and for whatever reason has led many people to believe they did a lot of good, further enabling the cycle of awful shit such as racism and abuse of power. The best time to make their terrible acts known is in fact when they die, because that is the only time you will realistically have a shot at putting a valuable spotlight on their awfulness and create a dialogue that will hopefully improve society for the better.

Eh. It's good if the ill you have to say is important and not just "well I thought he sucked"-opinion stuff (eg if they did actually bad things) and you're also trying to counter-act a narrative that they were just good people - so agreeing with ZombieGoats.

For non-celebs it's largely the same reasons, but I feel I'm less likely to say anything (not that I'm going to say anything with celebs either, probably) simply because it'll end up being more personal for everybody involved... the goal wouldn't be to hurt people.

I think it's terrible that humans have fun at the expense of another person's death, especially when these people often hypocritically claim moral rightness and being on the "right" side of morality. Myself included, except I don't consider myself on the right side of anything.

I reckon they left it a bit too long to speak ill of Jimmy Savile after he died. It took almost a year after his death for the news story to break that, shielded by his celebrity status, he'd been Britain's most prolific sexual predator (an estimated 450 victims, including four girls aged under 10).

Depends on the circumstances and, in particular, the severity of what they did to deserve the ill speaking.

It really depends on context. I'd say quite often it comes off as petty virtue signalling, but death is also not a shield from criticism.
