When the missionaries came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land. They said 'Let us pray.' We closed our eyes. When we opened them we had the Bible and they had the land.

Yeah, but he said it more as a joke, (and it appears he's not the original source):

Before [Tutu] left for the Nobel Prize Ceremony in Oslo, Norway, he spoke at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, and told one of his favorite stories. "When the missionaries came to Africa, they had the Bible and we had the land. They said let us close our eyes and pray. When we opened them, we had the Bible, and they had the land."

Nah. The problem is people taking their beliefs too far, not religion itself. It's not even an issue unique to religious people.

pros and cons. for the most part, except the obvious cultural clashes, religion teaches a pretty good basic sense of forgiveness, care, comfort, acceptance, kindness, and all that. like school, if no one's there to teach it, people have a difficult time figuring this stuff out.

but the obvious cons are when things clash, or, when some views don't seem to actually be positive and for the good of all. usually stuff stuck in time. but it all gets mixed up into the same teachings anyway, because if things change then the belief and structure of it crumbles too.

I don't hate religion in general, but I hate the people who try to use it as a way to control people or to spread hatred and bigotry. Which these days is a lot of people, sadly.

more tied to protestantism of calvin and luther than abrahamic religion as a whole. jews, muslims and several other sects of christianity like catholics and copts really arent tied to western civilization. but i get what ur saying.

edit: unless you meant religion as a whole, in which case, yea nvm.

Yes, I do hate religion. More often than not the people involved are vastly disingenuous, plus all the other bullshit that happens across the globe for religious factors.

I definitely understand why humans as a whole may need it, but it would have been real nice to start moving away from it as a crutch as we discovered more things throughout history.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Those movements exist because of religion. They were inevitable given how societies have propped up other religions. These new ones take advantage of that and are scamming and abusing people before anyone notices.

i dont think he accomplished anything other than helping spark more reformation of catholicism, and be one of the forefathers of the protestantism that grew in America.

I just don't like how modernized some of them have become. They throw in skits rather than speak directly from the texts themselves. I went to a Christmas church gathering a couple years ago, figured it would be a nice night out, sing a few Christmas Carols. But no. It was the god awful modified Christmas songs, and a bunch of "interviews" with religious figures. Can't even enjoy caroling anymore....
