I've played many Metroid games

I tried Super Castlevania IV for about an hour and couldn't get into it

I take it we're only counting the Metroidvania titles? Because I do like classicvania, but probably not more than stuff like CotM and SotN. I still voted Metroid though.

Metroid has gone off the rails far less badly than Castlevania.

Honestly couldn't say. I've played (and enjoyed) roughly an equal amount of games from both genres; Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night are both in my all-time top 5 games; and my other favorite games from both franchises (Fusion and Prime; Aria of Sorrow and Super 4) are pretty comparable in terms of personal enjoyment.

Metroid is more consistent but I think SotN is better than any Metroid game.

The best Castlevania will be more fun than the best metroid, but your average Metroid is way better than your average Castlevania.

Metroid is practically video games incarnate. Ball physics, sidescroller action, highly developed speed run culture, you name it.

Was there at the beginning as a Nintendo property and remains largely unchanged in terms of formula. Translated well into a 3D genre, and was arguably Halo's main competitor at the dawn of serious FPS gaming in the shadow of Half-Life or whatever. Strong claim to the throne of greatest series of all time. All you have to do is look at Smash to see how Samus stands out as a character, and it's also worth mentioning the nearly pristine moral structure of the Metroid series. She doesn't normally fight other people and mostly hunts mindless or evil aliens, or androids and ghosts, saves babies, etc. Other M really put a damper on a lot of player's experience, but Dread helps pick up the pieces. Metroid puts smiles on faces.

Comparing with Castlevania is not it imo

The thing is I think games like Blasphemous do Castlevania better than 99% of Castlevania

Metroid, but both rank amongst my favourite franchises.

My head says Metroid but my heart says Castlevania. In theory I feel I should prefer Metroid. Creepy sci-fi, more straight-forward gameplay. But Castlevania fucking rocks. Symphony of the Night is the best metroidvania game, and the GBA and DS games are top notch too.

Metroid is no slouch at all, but Symphony of the Night alone carries Castlevania.

Slight edge to Metroid. People who put SOTN over Super Metroid are wrong. SOTN has too steep of a drop off at the halfway mark to be up there above Super Metroid.
