It's at a federally funded research institute (not a university) and comes after a 6 hour shift at work

As part of the interview I have to hold a 10 minute presentation on my previous research projects and how they relate to the one I'm applying to

10 minutes is a pretty tight window. How competitive is the spot? I was also not aware of nonuniversity PhD programs (if I'm understanding you correctly).

Officially the PhD will be awarded from a university. But the work will be at the institute in question, and the prof is (alongside his university post) the director of the institute. Though how it works exactly is one of my questions I'll ask tomorrow

Not sure how competitive the spot in particular is, but the institute can be considered the German analogue to NASA, so I imagine it's pretty competitive

I think it went okay. We went overboard on time because they asked me so many questions lol. It gave me the chance to address the biggest weaknesses of my application, at least.

I'll get a reply in 2/3 weeks. If I progress, I'll have interviews with the professor and the head of dept

Lots of questions is a good sign.
