It's a downright simple 50/50 guess at worst.

Assuming of course the right answer is listed, but you have 3 scores in the 90s and 2 in the 80s, its going to have to be in the 80s to get a 90 avg.

Yes.

Assuming they are all worth the same, it is 86. Without using a calculator, 93, 94 and 95 average to 94 and that will be half the average. 85 and 87 require a final 86 to average to 86 for the other half.

Then 86 and 94 average to 90.

That wouldn't cut it at my alma mater.

The 95 and 85 cancel each other out (they average to 90)
So does the 93 and 87
So the only score you really need to consider is the 94. It's 4 over 90, so the remaining score must be 4 under, or 86.

i understand you have to show more detailed steps when solving problems for a particular math class, but that's between you and your teacher.

my question is given a single bit (8 digits, binary) how many LFSRs are there that we can also have a perfect inverse function, and also both are periodically complete, i.e. they should cycle thru 0-255 hitting on every combination of 0s and 1s going in one direction, but the inverse function let's us undo that.

what if we remove the periodically complete requirement, how does that change things?

can we learn some general principles about these things? what do we need to make a useful one?

88 is technically correct as well, as it would give them a 90.333333(infinite) average that would get rounded down to 90 on his report card.

While we're at it, an 83 would average to a 89.5 and be rounded to 90. So that is the lowest score to still give that score.
