ASoIaF.

I never really liked high fantasy, and anything having to do with elves, orcs/trolls, fights between light and darkness, etc. turn me off.

not to say that those elements are necessarily bad, but they never resonated with me.

ASoIaF has some of that going on, but the character drama has it feeling more compelling, for me.

I didn't care for books 4 & 5, though.

ASoIaF wouldn't exist without Tolkien's work. LotR wins for that alone, not to mention the fact that Tolkien actually finished writing it rather than leaving the fans hanging for more than a decade.

Cool but I still prefer ASoIaF by a lot.

I never got this argument.

things can improve on what influenced them.

I'm not saying it's the case between LotR & ASoIaF, though, but just in general.

^Creativity is important. You can't subverts themes & tropes (which is largely what ASoIaF is all about) without having those themes already created first.

ASoIaF is a great work there is no doubt about it.

LOTR is a once in a 100 year achievement that people enjoyed before we were born and will continue to enjoy long after we're dead.

I find LOTR more interesting in terms of monsters and gods, but ASoIaF is a much better human drama.

One of the weaknesses of LOTR is that Tolkien was uninterested in exploring the human condition in any significant capacity.

idk, I feel like overall, execution and quality matter more.

like, someone can have all the imagination in the world, but suck at trying to convey it in words and/or imagery, while someone else can maybe not have as much imagination, but can excel in those other areas.

plus, you don't need to subvert themes/tropes to be inspired by something.
