And I am feeling extremely disappointed in myself right now. I was just fine swimming 7 years back but now, I struggle to even float. All I was able to do was get my feet on the pool floor and move but I just couldnt swim my way around.

I guess its probably due to my low Body Mass Index which is 13.8 but now I feel broken because I like swimming but I cant do that anymore Granted the pool was a bit deep but still

I haven't swam in almost a decade, but I'm confident my muscle memory will kick in if I try.

No one told me it's the downswing, the front of the legs, that generates lift. I always that it was the part where you kick back out the water that did it. I ended up figuring it out when a shark swam under me lol

I was scared away from water as a kid when I slipped on a rock and fell into the lake when fishing

my dad was like 100ft away but his friend was right near me and dove in after me and when I was pulled out I said its really hard to breathe in there lol

It'll come back.

I started swimming this summer for the first time in years and while I can hardly swim a whole 10-15 feet (used to be able to do laps longer than that) it is definitely coming back.

I was also confident at first but it all broke today. I hope I can regain my ability to swim because its one of my favorite workouts to do

I can do alright if I'm moving.

Not worth a damn if stationary.

Will sink like a rock.

Never really was good at the dead man's float.

I've never been able to float, and that hasn't improved as I've gotten fatter in adulthood. Not sure why, but even if I fill my lungs with air my legs just sink down and drag me under.

I can wade pretty well and swim just fine but its certainly not something I'm great at.

Usually accumulating fat helps you to swim by providing buoyancy.

This is definitely one of those things I take for granted. Parents had a pool since I was like 4-5. I have a pool now. We had a boat as a kid, and one of my best friends lives on a lake. I've always been around water and am very comfortable and an excellent swimmer. To me it's just like riding a bike.... And then I remember there are people who never learned how to ride a bike. Lol

I was excited at first but then I went in and I got extremely panicked. And the water going in my nose and mouth made things worse

I used to annoy the shit out of lifeguards because I liked to hold my breath and just float around down at the bottom ot the pool.

That's just it. On calm waters that is how things start going wrong.
Always keep your senses about you.
This is going to sound like it's a CE joke, but it's not: My mother was the one to teach me to Respect Water.

Just learn the doggy paddle at least.
And treading water is hard at all...I could probably do it for hours.
Treading water is like a mix of riding a bike and flying...just vertically.
~It's actually relaxing.

I mean, I thought I could do it but what can I do when the water basically tries to drag my feet down. I used to do it fine before but after 7 years, I couldnt do it at all

I thought that would be a requirement for the job

everybody says this

but heres the thing, and it makes total sense

the entire point of running safety on a boat is that NO ONE goes in the water. If someone dives in after someone, thats now TWO liabilities for the captain. In fact, a lot of captains prefer first mates who dont know how to swim simply because they know for a fact the guy wont try and be a hero!

When someone goes overboard in the sea, my job was to never lose eye on them and simultaneously toss them anything that floats

If I jumped in after them, even if I could swim, the captain would be super pissed

I can kind of swim. I can mimic the motions on getting to one side of a pool to the other. The technique I can't actually do worth shit tho. It's like saying I know how to type, but I don't know how to touch type.

I can float worth anything tho. I've tried and multiple people question how I just sink like a brick. I have to continuously paddle my feet to float whereas most people just lay there.
