I tend not to switch on the radio by sheer habit.

When I'm trucking and it's loud I listen to White Zombie. Or everytime I go through a dust storm on I-40, I'll roll down the window and turn off the music. Shit is badass. If you're deep in they won't detour you unless they close it first. I've never caught the detour once lol. I fucking love the dust. It's so creepy and dark.

Another time I like silence is going through thr Virginia and West Virginia mountain roads at night. 1) I have to focus and 2) I change my posture and go 10/2 on the wheel. Now imagine this shit at night on variable grades on thin twisted divided highways

If I drive in silence I start wondering what is going on with every single sound my car makes.

I pretty much require the radio to be on. It started back when I was going to college, and I'd often drive there/home at night, so I kind of needed something on to keep me awake while I drove. I found listening (and singing alone) actually helped stave off Highway Hypnosis pretty well.

Now I'm just so used to it I generally turn the radio on in any car the moment I turn the key, before I even bother putting on the seatbelt.

I avoid silence in general. Ever since I was a really young kid, I basically needed noise in the background to focus (I used to turn the TV on for background noise just to do my homework, or when I was reading/studying in general). And as I've gotten older I've gotten so used to multitasking I kind of have to engage all of my senses or I get distracted. I put podcasts on when I'm playing video games (except when they're games with lots of dialogue where I have to listen to the game). I put podcasts or music on when I read. I even have trouble watching movies outside of a movie theater because of it - my immediate instinct is to start browsing the Internet while the movie is on.

Even as I type this, I'm playing a video in the background and listening to a podcast.

After about 40 years of living my life that way, silence kind of freaks me the fuck out. I can't even sleep in perfect silence, because I'm so used to the sound of the motor running in my air conditioner (which I run like 11 months out of the year).

Every once in a while, silence is cool While I usually like to listen to stuff, I dont get to much anymore. My truck is out of commission for a while, so I bought this used car. Doesnt have Aux cable (which is fine since I could make CDs if I wanted to) But the real problem is the speakers dont fully work. Sometimes, I think something jiggles and it works for a while But thats it. Its probably an easy fix, but its whatever

Most of the time I prefer to be able to concentrate on noticing the fuzzy caterpillars trying to cross the road but their are occasions when it's 3am and no one else is around and you can just blare Powerglove while bombing around the back roads. I'd start with the theme from the 90's X-Men and move onto Red Wings Over Baron

I don't normally pay much attention to news, besides what gets posted here, so I try to listen to a bit of the news radio on the way to work. station is like half ads though. (and the ads are so obnoxious...)

I like to drive in silence when I take short trips between branches (I'm a part time driver for a rental car company). On long trips I'll usually put on music but sometimes my trip takes me out of range; so I end up in silence toward the end of those trips as well.

If it's been a while since I've driven I like to drive without music or the radio, but I wouldn't say I'm listening to silence because I'm enjoying the sound of my car's engine. Obv usually crack the window a bit.

I did when I started driving just so I could fully concentrate on everything else. Nowadays I play my MP3 player (yes people still use those) with an earbud in one ear since my car doesn't have the apparatus for playing music through the speakers using my phone.
