That sounds just par for the course at Walmart. Ive never been to one in the last ten years that had more than one lane open!

So be on CE in a Walmart isle for a lil bit instead of being on CE at home.

thats Wal-Marts policy. Theyre more concerned with having self-checkout open than actual people operated lanes.

Why do they even have all those lanes if they only open 10% of them at a time and never more than that?

They open more during peak season like black Friday. Additionally because of the low barrier to entry, by assigning as many employees their own cash register that no one else ever uses, they make it easier to catch thieves.

I love it when I'm about to check out with my overflowing basket in the one lane they have open for someone with my amount of items, and someone with like 5 things in a cart come up behind me just as I have started to put my stuff up. I don't feel sorry for them, there are 8 to 10 aisles they could go to and be in their car before I finish up.

Back when I used to work at walmart, I was in the electronics dept. I got called over to take over a cashier positions maybe 4 time, and as soon I didnt have a customer in line, Id turn off the lane light and dip. Im not sure if that was what I supposed to do or not, but no one cared either way <_<

Walmart trying to find more ways to either not fill positions or pay people as little as possible. Despite being the richest privately owned company on the planet.

They are staffed by temp positions during busy seasons. If a Walmart has 30 lanes, I doubt they even have 30 cashiers to match under normal capacity.

It's either do all your shopping at the store and self checkout, or have all your shopping done by someone else and do a drive up pick up where they come to you and you can be shirtless. Very little middle ground, Merica.

We use to close our registers in electronics at 8pm every day. So many people would get pissed off at 9ish when our registers were closed. Get mad and leave all their crap in electronics.

I'm glad I left.

That's because on paper it's cheaper to have a 20 or less open with tobbacco plus (technically) 2 people manning self check than it is to have a handful of registers running.

This ignores the fact that self checks are a haven for people stealing, they just pretend to scan shit.

As long as people steal less than minimum wage then it's worth it.

The Walmart I work at has stopped hiring and cut hours. We have enough cashiers today for maybe two or three registers plus two people overseeing the two self checks. Which is gonna be hell.

I enjoy self checkout, particularly because I don't have to interact with anyone. If I could have it my way, ever store would have self checkout options. As for manned checkout going the way of the dodo I could care less tbh.

Roughly the same at mine, don't worry they'll spend 20 minutes every time lines get bad figuring out they have no floor associates to relieve the pressure either.
