Earlier this month, iCarly star Jennette McCurdys bombshell memoir, Im Glad My Mom Died, detailed alleged abuse she experienced while working at Nickelodeon. Now, several former child actors and Nickelodeon staffers are speaking out against Dan Schneider, creator of Zoey 101, Victorious, iCarly and Drake & Josh, who reshaped the network and kids television at large. According to a report from Insider, Schneider was known to push the boundaries of childrens TV, often thumbing his nose at Nickelodeons standards department and ramping up the series sexual innuendos, including scenes in which goo was squirted on young actresses faces. When it came to picking costumes, Schneider signed off on all outfits and campaign[ed] for the skimpier options, the report states. (McCurdy wrote in her memoir that she was pressured to wear a bikini on iCarly.) Russell Hicks, Nickelodeons former president of content development and production, told Insider that standards and practices read all the scripts for Schneiders shows, programming executives watched every episode, and parents and guardians were always present on set.

Every single thing that Dan ever did on any of his shows was carefully scrutinized and approved, Hicks wrote in a statement to the outlet. Daniella Monet, who played Trina Vega on Nickelodeons Victorious, told Insider that some of the actors outfits on the show were not age appropriate, and that she wouldnt even wear some of that today as an adult. The actor also recalled a time when she contacted Nickelodeon about a Victorious scene in which she ate a pickle while applying lip gloss. Monet expressed concern to the network that it was too sexual to air, but Nickelodeon aired it anyway. Monet noted that most of Victorious was very PC, funny, silly, friendly, chill, but once in a while, there would be questionable scenes. Do I wish certain things, like, didnt have to be so sexualized? she said. Yeah. A hundred percent. Monet also mentioned the male-dominance of Schneiders writers rooms. As Insider notes, none of Schneiders shows credited more than two female writers in the entirety of their runs; Zoey 101 and Drake & Josh had zero. Alexa Nikolas, who starred in the first two seasons of Zoey 101, has been outspoken about her traumatizing experience at the network for years. She told Insider that Schneider once screamed at her until she broke down in tears, and that he would often take photos with teenage actresses sitting on his lap.

I guess this confirms Nickelodeon saw all the creepy stuff going on in Dan Schneider's shows and didnt have an issue with it.

I was never a fan of icarly going off of Drake and Josh but Victorious was just weird. Like there was this one CEman character who went around everywhere and talked through his dummy. I mean wtf?

Alexa Nikolas (Nicole) left the show halfway through its four-season run after some uncomfortable experiences on set.

• In 2005, some media outlets reported that Britney Spears, older sister of series star Jamie Lynn Spears, came on set and screamed at Nikolas over alleged conflicts and fights with her sister, and also threatened to end her acting career. Nikolas confirmed this incident years later, but claimed that there were no "fights" with Jamie, but that "my best friend on the show didn't want to be my best friend in real life".
• Nikolas claimed that Jamie was not interested in socializing with her off-camera. However, Jamie got along very well with castmate Kristin Hererra. This resulted in the rest of the cast forming a clique with Nikolas being socially excluded. While filming a scene on a beach, Herrera allegedly assaulted and verbally abused Nikolas (Herrera denied this, however). Nikolas' mother would try to get the show's staff to intervene and stop the bullying, but they instead told her that her then-12-year-old daughter needed to "grow up" and to "be professional".
• After learning that Herrera would not be returning for Season 2 (allegedly for looking too old for her character), Nikolas felt "safe" and began bonding with series newcomer Victoria Justice. Aside from Jamie still refusing to associate with her, Season 2 started out well for Nikolas, only to get into an argument with Justice over a boy. This was followed by Justice gossiping about her to the other castmates, and resulted in even more hostility than before.
• During production of the final episode of Season 2, Nikolas was unknowingly lured by the 1st AD into Jamie's trailer and was berated by Britney, traumatizing her to the point of vomiting. Nikolas and her mother confronted series creator Dan Schneider, whose idea of diffusing the situation was to gift her a portable DVD player and order her to go on set to film another scene, where Nikolas faced more teasing from her castmates over the Britney incident.
• Some time later, Nikolas and her mother went to the Nickelodeon offices to have a meeting with Schneider and other Nickelodeon and Viacom executives. Nikolas claims she was forced to enter the room alone and was belittled by Schneider, telling her, "It's not called Nicole 101... If you wanted your own show, you should have went off and got one." He also agreed with Britney's alleged remarks that Nikolas should not be working in the acting industry. She left the room crying and told her mother that she wanted to quit the show. Nicole was Put on a Bus after Season 2, and Nikolas was not invited to any cast reunions. She has been unsuccessful in making amends with any of her former castmates.
• Spears would bring up their feud in her memoir "Things I Shouldve Said" - which was already met with public backlash due to her role in her older sister's conservatorship, seeing it as a ploy for her to attempt to play victim. In it, she claims Nikolas was the one who bullied her and talked about her behind her back. Nikolas would release an Instagram post confirming she was lying, saying it was a "typical move for a bully to play the victim card/gaslight others while straight up lying".

Yeah I was thinking it was going to be some girl wrapping her lips around a pickle or something like that to make is suggestive, but it's literally just her eating a pickle. I've only vaguely read up on this whole thing but it's really fucking confusing for someone who knows the cartoon channel nickelodeon as "that channel with rugrats and rocko's modern life and selling Doug to Disney" and then after my time SpongeBob, which I'd always despised

So this whole thing about it turning into... a live action TV show maker with preteens and really weird sliming gimmicks... wtf. Its like if cartoon network, a network for cartoons was making Zack Snyder movies or something.

There is nothing weird about the slime gimmick. That started with the 80s and continued with Figure it Out and then Slime Time Live

did not grow up with any of these shows, but i watched that 6 minute clip posted above and it honestly just seemed like teenagers being teenagers to me.

That's the scene she thought wasn't appropriate? What about when she mounted an old man in a hospital bed? Or Victoria washing her hair while she was in the bathtub? Or especially when Trina and Robbie get white lotion sprayed on their faces and in their hair? The pickle thing was G rated compared to most of the show.

Oh for sure, and I don't doubt there was some shady shit going on behind the scenes, but I also can't really speak to that since it's not something I've been following.
