I don't see why that would be the case. If anything they pushed things in the opposite direction. Their first original cartoon was litarally a talk show parody that interviewed real big celebrities like Jim Carry.

Like the 60s. Pretty much as soon as they showed up on tv instead of playing before movies.

Why would you think the attitude started with the 90s? Are you aware of cartoons from before then? lol

The 90s is when animation started to get edgier if anything.

I would say that the rise of television and Saturday morning cartoons is to blame for the idea that animation is for children. For awhile, cartoons were exclusively for kids, so it wasn't exactly wrong.

Not necessarily this either. The Flintstones were designed to just be like an animated stone age version of a sitcom just like The Honeymooners specifically, meant for family entertainment rather than just children per s

Hanna-Barbera's cheap and kid-focused cartoons of the 60s and 70s is responsible for that mentality. Then there was the 80s were most cartoons were seen as toy commercials.

The 90s (when CN debuted) is when cartoons became edgier if anything.

They had adult cartoons going pretty far back.

They even used them in WW2 training videos for the troops.

Maybe it was easier for teenagers to digest the info about being in danger at every turn if Private Snafu was showing you what to do.

It started as far back as the 60's, and maybe even the late 50's, when cheaply-made cartoons started showing up on TV, and theatrical cartoons (such as Looney Tunes) were edited to remove content deemed inapropriate for children. And as others mentioned, Hanna-Barbera was a big culprit of it.

A lot of what aired on Cartoon Network even in its early days would have been heavily edited--if they were allowed to air at all--if they had debuted on network television in the 60's thru 80's.
