For tabletop, check out Arkham Horror: The Card Game or Aeon's End if you want a coop.

For competitive, Dominion, the granddaddy of deck building.

For solo, Mage Knight

Dominion was the first one AFAIK and it's also the standard that I use to measure up all others against. Heart of Crown is my favorite because of how similar it is to Dominion while also improving on the formula.

Yesss! It was the custom upgrades to cards that sold me. Made practically every card viable

Is slay the spider really that good? I have owned it for years but have never given it a shot beyond 10 minutes
I think it's very solid, especially for the price. It's a bit of a staple in the genre in terms of balance, challenge, etc. But it's by no means perfect, and it's a pretty narrow genre to begin with.

You mean for board games?

My two most favorite are Clank! ("Clank! In space" is better than original Clank! IMO) and Heart of Crown (there's a computer game version of the real game)

@Tyranthraxus

Yeah, my brother has bother of those and we've played them both at least twice now. My brother has a habit of keep buying games, so we never go back to the ones we've played before.

But I tagged you because I wanted to talk to you a bit more. Have you ever played Dungeon Mayhem? It's not a Deck Building game out of the box, but I've turned it into one with Home Brew. I've also Home Brewed a solo game using those cards against my MTG cards.

Never played that one sorry.

So the other deck building games I've played are Dominion, Ascension, Legendary (there's lots of versions they're basically all the same), and star Realms and they're all pretty good I just like to stick to my favorites. Heart of Crown has enough expansions that every game is radically different.

Other games that I've played similar to but not real deck builders are:
  • Epic PvP Fantasy (shuffle builder, shuffle a race deck with a class deck to get a character and fight it out)
  • Smash Up (another shuffle builder. Each deck is a genre or trope like zombies, pirates, robots, etc. Just grab 2)
  • Pixel Glory (fantastic game that doesn't take long to play, build your deck by drafting during an auction at the beginning of the game, then kill as many monsters as possible)

As far as board games go, there's also Escape from the dark castle and its sequel Escape from the dark sector. Both are pretty great, especially with all the expansions. But I suppose they play more like roguelites than pure deck builders.

I wish I had someone to play board games with because there's just the group of friends I play MtG with that I think would be into this. Also I like Slay the Spire and Inscryption so I'm taking note of some of these recommendations. I don't hear about a lot of these games outside of like one or two conversations on the indie board.

Yeah, board games is just a more difficult hobby to have. Many games require wow sizable investments of both time and money, and you really need a crew of people who's down to regularly sit down and play. Otherwise it's not really worth it IMO.

*trumpet noises* now introducing: solo board gaming- the one thing you literally thought you'd never do, yet here we are.

Here are some StS inspired card games intended for solo play, but include 2 player as well. Notice two of them are pre-orders, because this is a relatively new frontier in board gaming.
