The manager of the data center team is asking again about me moving to that team...

Uuuuuuuuuuuuugh

The only thing I miss about my old job is having the entire environment memorized to where I don't have to think about basic infrastructure-related stuff.

I feel like the team I'm on (we mostly work on branch sites) is a comfort zone for me at the moment. The data center environment would be a large and completely new learning experience, and I'd pretty much be learning it almost from the beginning.

I feel bad because this is the 2nd time he's asking me to come over to the team, and I'm just like... I'm not sure. He says he's impressed with my problem determination skills, and I'd definitely be learning a lot and doing things in the networking realm that I've never done before.

One issue is that I'm in the beginning stages of studying for another cert (CCNA Devnet), and he says that would definitely be impacted because that team is so busy. The team I'm on is busy, too, but outside of being on call once every 7 weeks or so, my personal time is my own.

I gotta put some thought into this. It would be a lateral move, so no difference in pay, but... Apparently a number of people are recommending me for one of the open positions. I wish I was the kind of guy who was comfortable just jumping into a new environment and doing whatever, but I'm not. I feel like I need to know a lot about everything I'm doing before I'm comfortable with it.

There's no shame in staying in a position you like and are familiar with. It sounds like your current position is better suited to you right now too.

For every lateral move you make is an upward move you forego. They're playing with you.

Demand compensation, even for lateral moves. Where is the consideration? This is job creep 101. Asking you to expand what you know with no expansion of pay. Companies love it, thats why they are so gung ho about it.

Sounds like a bad idea. More on call, busier, no increase in pay? Screw that

we've been losing section supervisors because of how miserable the job is and every single time they ask me if i want to fill the position and i have to come up with some new unfortunate circumstance that prevents me from doing it. next time it happens part of me just wants to ask them why on earth i would want to take a job that has gone through four people in the last year that get stressed out and transfer or just bail entirely

I've done a lot of thinking over the last 24 hours or so and I've pretty much come to a decision.
  • My current skillset lends itself very well to the team I'm on.
  • I really like being a network engineer, and it's super fascinating. However, I think I'm at the point in my career where I don't want my "next step" to be moving to another team where I'd have to learn a whole new environment and then just be a network engineer over there.
  • I'm still very early on in learning Python in preparation for the CCNA Devnet cert, but I'm finding this Python stuff to be super fascinating. I think I want my next career move to be more focused on network automation and possibly front-end development if I get really good at it. I'll have to see how it goes once I get better and better with coding and automation.
  • If I go to the data center team, then a lot of my focus with learning will be learning entirely new platforms, the data center environment, and some other things I've never done before. The data center team manager saying my current study path will be impacted if I move is making me not want to do that.

So I think I'm gonna stay where I'm at for now, but I'm purposefully taking steps to go where I want to be next.

I'm gonna have a chat with the manager of the data center team tomorrow.
