Yeah it was good. I'd give it a 9 out of 10 for fans. Lots of people say 10 out of 10. For an average movie goer I'd say 8 outta 10.

Yep, even though I never watch movies in theaters anymore. It's solid, non-political, non-superpower movie fun...which is hard to find. It's not an all-time great movie or anything, but it's the sort of thing I look for. 8.5/10 in today's environment.

I barely remember the original: I remember thinking it was 'OK'. This is better.

non-political, non-superpower

What?

This was a multi billion dollar DoD propaganda film. fun as hell, but there is a definite political agenda here, and that agenda:

America: Fuck Yeah!

I know some people felt that way, but I didn't really. The movie simply HAD to be about the US Air Force blowing something up: they ha no choice there. That said, I feel like they leaned as far as they could away from anything truly political: the enemy was never named, there wasn't a lot of flag waving/etc. It focused on the technical aspects of one limited mission.

The original had a fairly obvious Air Force recruiting component, sure, but I felt they tried to be different this time. This felt like liberal Hollywood trying not to do that.

P.S. Why is Fuck Yeah a spoiler? :)

Sounds like it was the only summer "blockbuster" worth seeing

Audience liked it, critics liked it, biggest opening for a Tom Cruise flick and it made bank

I'll see it one day

the enemy was never named,

Iranian nuclear enrichment site, they needed to hit it before it was operational to prevent contamination of the surrounding area. The unspoken implication being the knowledge that Israel will strike the facility when it goes operational and Israel will be less concerned about the collateral damage from enriched uranium dust clouds rising from the crater of one of their bunker busters.

Of course it's a blink and you'll miss it lines at two or three points in a two hour movie.

At the end of the day, they are selling the idea that Tom Cruise is still flying top of the line state of the art fighter jets thirty years later and doesn't look like Val Kilmer who did the lame thing and stopped being a fighter pilot, so be cool and join the air force to be a pilot that will sit in a drone station in redacted and drop bombs on children half a world away.

PS why not. (Presentation!)

The Air Force and and rarely Marines can join Top Gun, but the the word seems to be the Navy is where all the cool kids go to fly. The Air Force is like a 25% to 33% larger fleet though.
