They murdered Caligula and a bunch of others and he just hid and cried, then the guard found him and were like "Yes, this is the guy we need in charge."

That's the kind of thing you don't see in movies. The brave leader crying and cowering in the corner.

You do see that in I, Claudius.

IIRC you do kind of see this at the end of Caligula. I don't think Claudius was explicitly crying, but he was shell-shocked and cowering, and the assassins picked him up and carried him off to be the new emperor.

Or perhaps "This guy knows what we're about now, he probably won't get any funny ideas about throwing us in with the lions for entertainment. Beats the last guy at least."
