Rate/10

Watching it for the first time in at least 15 years. Midway Games really ripped off that lightning dude.

7/10

It's a movie I should love more than I do, especially as a Mortal Kombat fan

I'm a much bigger fan of both the Escape From films

It's literally mortal Kombat from beginning to end

I bet they made a point to go back and rewatch the movie every time they made a new Mortal Kombat game. The influences of David Lo Pan and the Three Storms on Shang Tsung and Rayden should be pretty evident. But there was a bunch of overlapping content that I didn't realize until my most recent viewing.

The Dead Pool from MK2 is a lot like the Drowning Hell scene. Mileena's battle fan is nearly identical in form and function to Egg Shen's. The death of Thunder is a lot like Mileena's fatality. Stryker from MK3 could be argued to be like Jack Burton. (Sorry, Jack. You deserved better.) Even the pit that Jack nearly fell into when he was in a wheelchair is copied in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero.

I kinda stopped following the MK series after that. But I bet there are a bunch of references in later games (and even the ones I've mentioned) that I've completely missed.

There's plenty others. Goro's lair is in there although the thing in the movie looks like Moloch rather than Goro. Egg Chen looks like was the inspiration for Bo Rai Cho's appearance. The knife throw Jack does in the movie looks like it was given to Kano.

And also Liu Kang really does seem like a fusion of Bruce Lee + Wang Chi. The costumes of some of the gangs look like the background stage characters as well.

There's just so much stuff in there that was mined for ideas in Mortal Kombat.

The Rock would make Jack the hero, the original is great because Wang is the actual Hero.

He's not really. Jack is who the plot follows most of the time and he's also the one that kills David Lo Pan. There's nothing really typical "main hero" about Wang except for he gets the main love interest and Jack gets nothing.

^Jack's the protagonist, but he's actually the comic relief.

Even Russell & Carpenter have said this-- the whole point is that he thinks he's the hero, but Wang actually does all the cool hero shit like flying sword fights, martial arts, saving the damsel, etc. while Jack spends most of the climax of the movie unconscious because he's a dumbass.

Yeah. There was a ton of stuff that I missed. I never would have noticed the similarity in attire with Liu Kang's bandana.

Even the studio didn't catch that. That's why they insisted upon the intro where they're talking about what a brave hero Jack Burton is.
