Company I'm interviewing with is giving me the option to begin training as either a full-stack Java Developer or Cloud Engineer. The salary would be the same and I have no particular preference at the moment, so I'm just wondering if anyone here has any insight on which would be a better specialization to go into for long-term career prospects and such

Cloud Engineer is an easier job than Java Developer. However, if you do Java development, that is more impressive on your resume

Well do you want to code or work more on hardware configurations?

full-stack java dev. Way more product focused roles available where you'll be able to carry your skillset into

edit: What would you be learning for front-end?

Probably code, although honestly I know next to nothing on what working on hardware configurations would entail.

My Java training would focus on learning React, Angular, and Spring Boot. Honestly I learned nothing about any of these in any of my CS classes so I'm only familiar with the names. I've heard that Java front end is rather outdated and only used in legacy systems so I am a bit worried about the long-term practicality of what I'll be learning there, whereas cloud technology is only becoming more and more prominent.

My training lists AWS/Azure, Docker/ Kubernetes Jenkin/ CI/CD, and Terraform, but I agree it's kind of a vague description and since Devops seems to be a specialized thing for people with years of experience I'm not sure what my day-to-day stuff would actually entail at an entry level. It'd be for a consultancy (yes, I already know they suck but it's my only option at this point), so I can't necessarily ask what I'd be doing either without knowing the client. I do feel like the full-stack Java is a safer bet.

What is your current skillset that the company is willing to train you in either of these tracks?

Also while Cloud engineering is booming I don't ever see Java Development diminishing in importance. It's about as valuable a job as you can get with career opportunities.

I have a BS in Computer Science but that's about the extent of my skillset or relevant experience. After reading other people's impressions I am definitely leading towards Java, the uncertainty of what exactly I would be doing as a cloud engineer makes me a bit hesitant, and software development seems more interesting.

Is it significantly easier? I've never been super confident in my coding abilities but I'm not sure if that's just imposter syndrome

I've also heard that some cloud engineers have to be on-call at all times which turned me off, not sure how true that is though

Reason is primarily used to access experience.
However, imagination is necessary for reason to produce some model of what it intends to experience.

Obviously Im not an expert on this but I believe most software development is a collaborative effort so thats a bit tricky. You could maybe do freelance web development or something, but I dont think that would necessarily be easily. And youd still have to work with the client. Hopefully more knowledgeable people can chip in.
