Do dogs do that, though? I'm thinking it didn't get the message since it doesn't know cat mannerisms. Regardless, the owner should have intervened.

That serval is way too chill. My savannah has sent my gfs golden retriever running with her tail tucked between her legs just by smacking it with his claws not even out.

That's probably the only cat I'd consider for a pet.
On topic, I don't know much about animal mannerisms, but I was thinking the same thing about it blinking.

Its natural. The personality is a huge reason savannah cats (serval x domestic breed cats) took of so much in spite of being such a new breed.

What other cats love walks and fetch and act like a dog?

Definitely. As a cat owner I appreciate what an amazing creature that is!!

  • blinking = smiling for cats. It's the most non-aggressive / "hey I'm a friend" thing they do
  • tail down to indicate no territorial claim
  • no flapping tail around to warn of attack
  • sitting to show zero aggression or incoming jump
  • not responding to aggression even INCHES away from face
  • meowing consistent with passive behavior -- no angry meows or hissing
That dog is an insecure piece of s*** and probably a lot like its owner.

So much respect for that serval right now!!

also:
  • not forcing direct eye contact. Cats consider direct sustained eye contact aggressive.
  • looking away to defuse the aggression
  • eventually walking away non-confrontationally
serval is just a huge W.

My first thought whenever seeing a dog acting like this. That's the biggest little dog I've seen. It has the personality of a chiwawa. And chiwawas are usually owned by people who don't know how to discipline animals or think it's cute/funny that it's angry because it's small. I'm not gonna lie, I think with the small ones it's kind of funny too from afar. But if it's my dog there would be nothing funny about looking like someone who can't raise a dog and has no established respect.

Modern "pet parents" who film their animals for attention and profit don't believe in discipline at all.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Regular house cats have smacked my pit mix and put him in his place lol. He just looks all disappointed he can't sniff them and lays down while trying to sneak peaks put the side of his eye. I always took the cats side, since it was there house. A stray cat outside did it to him too lol. It's cute but sad watching him walk away with his head down all disappointed.

Thought it would be an interesting experiment to play this video for my cat (mackerel tabby with Maine coon lineage).

Weird but he instantly starts purring whenever the serval meows. lol.

Not sure what the serval was saying but clearly it was some nice s***.

yea, I don't think the dog understands, unfortunately.

iirc, dogs show they're not a threat by rolling on their backs so there was a miscommunication between them

The dog, who is always intimidated by a suspicious person, is gradually becoming more open and docile toward the serval, who for some reason is polite and shows no hostility toward the dog.

Both cats and dogs use their eyes to communicate. The dog kept staring, so the serval was trying to diffuse the situation.

It's a very good technique when trying to make friends with stray and feral cats outdoors. Do the right eye movements with your eyes and they'll instantly become relaxed.
