The tl;dr is that they've decided to add a virtual currency to their game called runestones with all the scumminess that entails, so you can no longer buy items with just straight-out cash. You have to buy runestones to buy shit.

And if you care about the Battlegrounds auto-battler mode, it's even worse because they've made it legitimately pay to win. You can now only buy the "tavern pass" with runestones which gives you the ability to choose between four heroes instead of two at the start of the game. In addition, you won't get any experience for the rewards track if you don't place top four (what the mode considers winning).

It's scummy for all of those games too and Hearthstone never did it.

And they knew it was scummy as fuck, so they did their best to hide it in a Battlegrounds update post.

This system is designed to:
a) obscure how much items cost by hiding their true cost behind an exchange rate
b) make people overpay because they end up with leftover amounts of fake currency
