Playing PSX games on 2004 portable hardware will always be neat. And the original model is such a charmingly chonky boy, but still feels pretty tiny compared to something like a Switch. The screen ghosting sucks though, especially in dark games.

It had a great collection of Square and Atlus games. Plus portable PS1 games!

My favorite handheld ever, I have three of them and still play them constantly. Great library plus you can play basically any PS1 game that didnt require the second stick or second triggers

I have the limited edition red God of War one that came as part of a bundle with Chains of Olympus.

I had some weird fifa knockoff game and I think it was the most fun I ever had mobile gaming.

If you have a Vita you can patch its native PSP emulator to have some games support the second analog. Makes GTA LCS/VCS a lot more fun.

My Steam Deck is blowing it out of the water, and I liked my GBA more than my PSP

Anyway while many people liked the psp for its brewing capabilities, quite frankly I feel the Vita is what the PSP should have been in the first place. Featuring actual analog sticks, this is what the PSP should have had from the start instead of that horrible thumbsore nub.

screen ghosting is like the original gameboy, your character moves and where it used to be blurs. I guess you can call it motion blur effect?

PSP was the console I identified most with even if I ended up using my DS *a lot* more.

Things moving on the screen can look blurry due to the screen having a low refresh rate.

I do agree that the Vita is just about better in every way.

I'm pretty sure the reason the PSP sold so well was because of how easy it was to hack it and get homebrew running on it.

Still have my silver one, but I doubt Ill ever play it again what with Tactics Ogre coming soon to the PS4.

The only part of the UMD I didn't like was the open section on the bottom.

If only Sony went with MiniDiscs with a protective shutter that exposed both sides.

This would've allowed Double-Sided & Double-Layered discs that could store 3.6 GB instead of only storing 1.8 GB in Dual Layer on one side and 900 MB in Single Layer.

Oh huh. I honestly can't remember this ghosting issue, but if it's only for the original psp I just played it a handful of times with stuff like gta or winning eleven.

When I got my psp 3000 (which I've taken care of and kept in pristine condition to this day) that's when I played all the other tons of games and rpgs that came out for psp after 2009. For one thing, the rebirth of Ys is owed to psp imo. And then there are other RPGs that I personally got to experience for the first time and enjoyed such as lunar silver star harmony or the star ocean games.

Just a shame it wasn't the one released in 2005. Even without the proprietary crap and whatnot, it was dead on arrival. Even Nintendo, the king of handhelds was struggling in the wake of mobile gaming taking off and the changing industry.

Also to the other post, there's absolutely no defending UMDs whatsoever they are trash. They make Gamecube's ridiculous minidiscs seem better than bluray

i used to upload videos on it and watch them on the train. some people looked at me like i was weird or thought it strange... little did they know i was just way ahead of them.

I remember Sony announced they were developing the PSP on the same day Nokia announced the launch of the N-Gage to completely steal the thunder put the N-Gage to shame (as if the N-Gage didn't already shame itself with terrible design and baffling price point)

I do not think that having a second stick would have made a difference, what really killed it was Sony killing it to focus on the vita, only to then decide that they dont really care about the vita, sort of like sega did with the game gear (success, ahead of its time) and the nomad.

Ys VII is a badass game. I hope it comes to PS4/PS5 as apart of the PS+ library, it deserves more recognition. I've also played an hour or so of the Book I and II remake. There's a trillion hours of RPGs on the psp. I'm playing through the PSX versions of Lunar and Grandia for the first time on it.
