Pretty slight, but I think every single bit of storytelling in this is very good. I love the intro, and Baby Metroid's death scene is awesome.

There isn't much to it, but I do appreciate any game's ability to convey emotion without dialogue and that's what this pulls off with the last boss in particular.

Environmental storytelling that creates a stellar atmosphere and sets up for a surprisingly emotional finale.

There isn't much to it and I probably couldn't be bothered to write a paragraph justifying this score...but the ending is one of my favorite scenes from any video game ever and just left such an impact that some scores defy logic. The top notch environmental storytelling throughout the game helps too and was eons ahead of its time.

Accurate. That feeling in general is what helped me justify my score to myself.

It's an 8. Conveys a lot without words. I love Fusion but it could have benefitted from fewer interruptions.

Not to me. I nominated it and figured it would score somewhere between 6.5-7.5 because the subtle environmental storytelling is well done and the climax is one of the most memorable from that era.

Yeah Super Metroid is a master class in minimalism in video game storytelling. I absolutely think it deserves a high score. I may have even underrated it but I can only rate something where the story isn't the draw so highly.

No its not.

4.5/10. Some nice visual details but compared to something like Metroid Prime or even moreso INSIDE there is very little to that world. You dont have the slightest idea how most of that stuff got there. The ending is pretty good though.

Is how it got there a story I particularly care about for most of it? Not really. That sounds like a pretentious indie game's version of minimalist storytelling that ends up not being minimalist at all.

What is interesting that is there works, and it's in the right amount.

Like Metroid Prime's heavy handed "let's learn every bit about every detail with this visor" I'm absolutely not into that.

I dont necessarily mean every tiny detail being planned out, more the world having thought and meaning behind it which Super Metroids largely doesnt. Or evoking emotion, which Super Metroid doesnt until briefly at the very end.

The wrecked ship is kinda neat cause you can infer there was some sort of failed alien research and/or cultivation attempt, and the ship regaining power after you kill the boss is a neat detail too.
The Maridia areas come off as really creepy in general to me
Lower Norfair has all the Chozo Statues and stuff which really makes it feel like you're in some culturally significant ruin of some sort. The music helps here too.
The ending is obvious.

Brinstar is the only zone I don't really care for. The only interesting part of that zone is the animals that streamers like to kill or save.

I dunno I like the world it sets up quite a bit. Beyond the ending the "emotional response" I get is mostly being creeped out at times but that's okay. Curiosity and actually wanting to think about the background areas at some level (without the game forcing me to) is a plus. As far as games with basically no text beyond the intro go it's hard to imagine anything doing much better for me at least.
