I imagine it started as planets but got muddled over the years.

Stars is one syllable while planet is two, so people are more inclined to say what slips through their lips easier.

A relic of a bygone age when geocentrism was the law of the land.

Also has roots in astrology, I believe. as technically they phrase all of their shit in terms of the stars moving, at least their relative positions in the sky

Star alignment is way more infrequent than planet alignment so its more appropriate to say.
