Oddly enough, although I hate having COVID here, the two years of enforced isolation enabled me to get a lot more writing done, because I was doing a lot less traveling and public appearances and speeches and all of that stuff, the 73-year-old said. Im making progress, but Ive given up on any hope of predicting the end. Every time I do, I dont make it and everybody gets mad at me, and theres no sense. Itll be done when its done. Hopefully, COVID wont kill me, so we wont have that issue. I do find it a little grisly, people speculating online about whats going to happen to the rest of the books when I die. I dont like to speculate about that. I dont feel close to dying.

For a book in a popular series? That's pretty bad. I know ASoiaF is pretty complex and the books are long, but Jesus, he was firing them off every couple of years before this. Even the most recently released book only took 6 years. Now it's like he's not even working on it at all.

Two years of Covid and Sanderson secretly wrote four books and is now publishing them all, in addition to all the other big stuff everyone knew about.

I'm guessing the reception to season 8 of Game of Thrones derailed things a bit for him because he's probably seeing that people absolutely despised some things he fully intended to write and now he's kind of scrambling to figure out if he should stay the course completely, make some small changes to try to make the same basic ideas be received better, or change his plans entirely.
