This is a long list, so I wouldn't expect all of these things to be implemented since it would be a pretty meaty game. But here are some things I think would be really cool for the next MK game:

Courses
-All previously playable tracks from past games as retro tracks
-Coordinated with above, All cups from previous intact as retro cups. Or...
-Ability to create custom cups. Choose 4 or 5 tracks from the entire game to create your own cup (including Mirror versions), name it, choose an avatar (Mario Cup, Flower cup, Bowser cup, etc), and upload it so others can play it
-New Zelda courses might be cool
-Have more courses like the Animal Crossing course, that changes based on the environment. Whether that's a season change, or whether there's a day/night version, etc. Different obstacles during day than night, etc
-Have a course or a few courses where the animation changes based on where on the track you are. Like Lap 1 starts out as MK9 graphics but then you go through a tunnel and you come out looking like SNES graphics. Game would still play the same mechanically but the look is different
-Add Backward races. This would be similar to Mirror mode, but instead of playing the course as it's normally played, you would play the course starting from the Finish and going back to the Start. Not all courses would work properly in this way, and some would have to be modified to work

Characters
-All previously playable characters from past games present (including Birdo. Bring back Birdo)
-No more babies added to characters until Baby Yoshi is added. We've had Baby Yoshi since SMW wtf
-Make certain characters have different characteristics (like in prev games where Bowser/DK are heavier and slower, but maybe when they hit you with something or bump into you, it takes you longer to get back on track).
-Maybe Toad is faster than everyone else but gets offensive items slightly less often, etc

Items
-Make some items come up more frequently for some characters. Toad might get mushrooms slightly more frequently than Bowser. Bowser may get fireballs more often.
-Make some items locked to a character (Only Bowser gets fireballs maybe). Not all items can be locked
-Bring back the jump feather, so I can enjoy my favorite ghost house track from SNES
-Add new items we haven't seen yet
-Add a new rare "yellow" shell, that allows you to choose which character on the track you want it to hit (similar to how Blue Shell goes straight to 1st, maybe you want it to hit Mario or Bowser)
-Come up with an alternative to first player always getting bananas and coins all the damn time
-Add a mushroom that makes you much larger for a period (did they do this once? I feel like this may have been in MK DS)

And lastly, let's see a Mario Kart Maker where we can make our own tracks and upload them. This probably wouldn't fit into a MK9 game, but may be cool as it's own separate game (and even cooler if there was compatibility to create it in Mario Kart Maker, and then send it to MK9 with a save file to upload and play)

"Reverse Cup" was almost a thing in Double Dash, but was replaced by Mirror

It's baffling how they added F-Zero courses and even the Blue Falcon to 8, but Cpt. Falcon himself is not a playable character

And fuck yes, Samus/Gunship kart and a Zebes course (or two) NEEDS to happen.

I like most of that, but hell no to that yellow shell. Giving an overly competitive community the ability to target a specific player, sounds like a terrible idea.

Yeah, that has "online harassment" written all over it.

Not to mention how it would work. Would a menu pop up while driving and you have to go down a list of racers?
Seems cumbersome and useless.
