With the advancements in technology, ps5 really should have come with 2 TB models instead of just a meager 1 TB especially when games are like, 100 GB per game and only increasing from here on.

Thinking I might get a ps5 earlier than I intended against my better judgment, as early as 2023 if not 2024, with the hope that they'll have a ps5 pro by then with even better performance and no load times and more than 1 TB storage for all the games it's gonna have

Probably when the mid-generation refreshes come out.

Also, I can't believe it's been almost two years and the generation doesn't even feel like it has started yet.

FYI - The PS5 has an extra m.2 SSD slot and you can put any Gen 4 nvme SSD in it. I added a 1TB drive to mine.

Probably because SSD is too expensive. If you want a $700 PS5 then buy yourself a 2tb SSD to install.

You should see how much Xbox Series SSDs cost.

Probably yes, it's taking longer because of the switch from HDD to SSD, SSD's being 4x as expensive per GB.

Also game file sizes are as huge as they are because developers don't care to optimize. However gigabit internet should be standard at this point which would make deleting and reinstalling 100GB games less of a hassle.

Yeah but you know what else is becoming standard? Data caps. On home internet.

Not if you expect to pay more than $600 for cutting edge hardware with long term storage space.

As technology moves forward, the answer is yes.
Back in 2000, it was hard to believe that a console would come with 1 TB storage right out of the box.

It's kinda crazy that the ps3 was $600 in 2006

That's like, what, $700 today for a console of its caliber?

In 2000 we were still transitioning from 3.5 inch floppy disk lol...

I've got both. The best game on either system is still Astro's Playroom. Although to be fair, that was a really impressive game / tech demo.

For what, an internal SSD or external SSD? The former at 2GB based on high brand name currently averages between $250-$350 retail. This is accounting for a drive with read speed capabilities to match the console's RAM and CPU power or else games would run as shitty as the old PS3 days.

Now mass produce those drives and multiply per console unit sold, which Sony sells at a loss so that's why I think it's not going to happen this gen however...in time engineers will figure out new compression techniques to keep storage costs out of the box low.

Damn... then it seems developers should really start relearning compression techniques like they did in the old days because these ridiculous 100+ GB games are eating up way too much space

Yep. The lack of true exclusives make this gen really weird to me. I have zero interest in anything outside of some switch rpgs.

I feel like more and more people are becoming PC and mobile gamers too.

It's a gen that literally started up in the midst of a pandemic that's what's really weird.

Good lord why has storage space not kept up with the rest of technology. Everyday there's a new resolution and new gimmick and newfangled terminology like "ray tracing" popping up but storage space is still at the terabyte level and not higher petabyte

I think the top-end flash tech is using two electrons per bit now. We're simply hitting the end of what CMOS can do.

Hell, at this point I'll take 1.5 TB since even the 1 TB isn't actually 1000 GB, it's more like 800 GB and that extra 200 GB we miss does make a difference.
