In related news, the Iranian government has officially come out and blamed Rushdie and his supporters for the attack:

Iranian media have extensively commented on the attack, calling it "divine retribution".

Iran's state broadcaster daily Jaam-e Jam highlighted the news that Rushdie might lose an eye following the attack, saying "an eye of the Satan has been blinded".

But on Monday, Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani - giving the country's first official reaction - said Tehran "categorically" denied any link, adding "no-one has the right to accuse the Islamic Republic of Iran".

However, he said freedom of speech did not justify Mr Rushdie insulting religion in his writing.
"In this attack, we do not consider anyone other than Salman Rushdie and his supporters worthy of blame and even condemnation," the spokesman said during his weekly press conference in Tehran.

"By insulting the sacred matters of Islam and crossing the red lines of more than 1.5 billion Muslims and all followers of the divine religions, Salman Rushdie has exposed himself to the anger and rage of the people."

Iran had no other information about Rushdie's assailant except what has appeared in media, he added.

The "words are harm" crowd on social media have been screaming stuff like this for YEARS. Change the topic from Rushdie and Islam to Chapelle and trans people and you'll see a complete script flip in terms of whether "emotional harm" is a serious problem or not.

Don't get me wrong. I fully agree that words can cause harm, with that harm being non-physical. And I'm fine with someone calling that "violence", as long as a distinction is made that the violence is different than physical violence. The point being, "there are levels to this shit."

But going and trying to stab and kill someone for is NOT an appropriate level of recourse.

I mean, emotional harm is a serious thing. We can talk about the nuance between it and physical harm , but emotional harm is very serious.

I mean, I do hold speech to be a very important thing. And precisely because of that, I acknowledge all the negatives that can come from speech.

You can't wax lyrically about how speech is so wonderful while then saying people shouldn't let words impact them.

The real cancer is fanaticism and the violence it spreads. Even if religion was eradicated completely peacefully we'd find a way to be at each other's throats for bad reasons.

We need to find a way to live with people we disagree with. Not everyone is going to see the world in the same way and the sooner people realize that "Everyone should think like me." is the battle cry of the barbarian the better off we will be.
