For instance, there was this mod for Freespace 2 where some objectives were to destroy big enemy ships before they escaped, but it would still complete the mission if they did. However, the final mission could be nigh impossible because all those escaped ships were now added to the battle.

If I'm remembering correctly in one of the MGS games isn't there's a part where you have to fight the ghosts of all the soldiers you've killed up until that point?

The point of the game is stealth so I guess killing a lot of people could be considered a weak performance.

XCOM games basically have snowballing difficulty based on your performance. You can do badly in an early mission and lose some of your best troops but complete the mission. You can then be too weak to effectively counter the aliens moves against you. This in turn makes future missions even more difficult.

this doesnt really count as weak performance but in metal gear solid 3 you can kill The End early on without him being able to react, and if you do then obviously his boss fight later is skipped

Don't most RPGs with Level-scaling, kinda do this?
Especially older ones, where escort quests become almost unbeatable because the person you're escorting isn't also level-scaled, since the enemies are ridiculous level 50s, and you're escorting a level 10 or whatever.....

Also, if you choose a poor build, high levels are more difficult.

You have to walk up a river and meet the ghosts of everyone you have killed. They cant attack you, but it will take a while if you have killed many.

They do try to grab you, though that doesnt really matter since the point of that sequence is to die (and then revive yourself)anyway.

In Fallout 1, if you take too long to finish the main quests, (aside from getting several bad endings) the super mutants invade Necropolis and instead of having to get past a handful of mutants, they will be all over the place.

Various action games where you don't even get to finish the game if you play on the easiest setting. In double dragon 2 on the NES, you can only play like 3 stages on practice before the game tells you to git gud and play normal/warrior. If you play normal, you don't get to face the final boss. Got to play on the hardest setting/supreme warrior for that.

I guess you can look at the older fire emblem games this way what with the perma-death and whatnot. Go around and lose too many guys and all you will have left is the occasional late game pre-premotes the game might give you....fire emblem 5 is a real bad time with too many losses, lol.

Yeah, you can just instantly kill yourself with the fake death pill and then revive. The only thing you get for completing it is the Sorrow's camo.

Lots of examples but in Fire Emblem: 3 Houses, the chapter right after the timeskip in the Blue Lions route is often infamous for softlocking a lot of files on Maddening difficulty. Often times, people don't like to grow Ashe, who tends to have middling stats, but he's a forced deployed unit here. Also you don't get to use Dedue, who is often times one of your 3 best frontliners. Instead you get a unit new Gilbert, who you had 0 control over and will receive in a default state.

Gilbert will hilariously die in one round of battle against every swordfighter on the map and cannot outpace and kill the 2 archers surrounding him. There is no easy way to get your Byleth and Dimitri there without them being killed either. Also another end of the battlefield spawns Mercedes and Annette together, who, unless you build them specifically for this chapter and screw yourself over in other chapters, cannot survive 1 round of combat either and often times cannot outspeed all the units surrounding them to one shot them reliably. Also if you happen to not give Mercedes or Annette Lysithea's exclusive accessory (presuming you recruited her in the first place), then you actually cannot kill a unit over a wall, despite them able to reach your girls in 2 moves, making it impossible to survive

I actually beat this level in Maddening without prior knowledge because I was lucky enough to give Mercedes Lysithea's staff in the chapter prior to this out of literal pure accident. But there are a lot of cases where people didn't make multiple saves and were mathematically locked from being able to win lmfao. They had a better chance of winning the lottery with the sheer amount of attacks they would have to dodge

In FFTactics, if you save after the first easy Riovanes battle with your entire squad, you're thrown into a battle where Ramza fights one-on-one against a character with 100% accurate sword abilities and physical-attack counters. If you didn't raise Ramza properly, you may not be prepared to survive. But, even if you do luck through it, you're then thrown into the second half of the fight against a character that uses hard-hitting summons and 100% success status effects, plus has 3-4 times as much health. Oh, and he has minions that show up with hard-hitting moves, too. If you rely on RNG to get through the first part, good luck with the second, haha.

Of course, there are ways to cheese the fight, but if you already saved, your options are now limited. There's a reason I preach the gospel of careful saving in Riovanes.

I actually screwed up so badly I had to restart the game due to the level scaling: You could screw with the Level Scaling, because it was only based on Squall's level. So you'd make him escape every fight after level 20... And then finish all the fights with everyone else.

Well, I did this only with 2 other people... Who both are forced out of your party at a specific point in the game. (If I remember, sometime late in Disc 3). So I had to add other people to my party... who were all Like levels 10-15... so they're all weaker than Squall, I saved at a point where you can't go backwards from, and forwards is a boss... based on your highest leveled character's level and completely butt stomped me.

If you die in the second two-part battle, you do the first battle over, too. It's more of a "use a separate file" than "never ever save" moment, but either way...

Though its not overly crazy.

Each mission has an optional objective, but if you dont clear it, it becomes a mandatory objective in the next mission.
