You know, I've been saying that for years.

Other than his toxic masculinity towards Belle, you rejects him multiple times throughout the movie, he's 100% in the right to lead the charge towards rescuing her from the Beast.

It's literally an Beastman holding a local captive, and HE'S the bad guy for trying to save her? Makes no sense.

He also belittles anyone who wants to attain knowledge. And you know, tried to force Belle to marry him by threatening to throw her father in an insane asylum?

Dude is straight up a fucking narcissist willing to hurt others for his own gain. He is definitely a horrible villain.

For real. In a small town like that, he's keeping the local farmer's business going single handedly.

Gaston is a champion for Small Business.

Bullshit, he keeps the egg price through the roof denying a good source of protein for rural, low income households. He's evil.

No idea wha this "Belle" business is, but the egg isue is very crucial to understanding Gaston.

He's not misunderstood at all, but we got the guy who imitates Vincent Price under contract and the bank will repossess his house if he doesn't make this movie for us.

I mean. A cop who arrests dangerous criminals and then goes home to beat his wife isn't exactly an upstanding citizen. Doing a single morally correct thing does not make you a good person.

Disney's Beauty and the Beast borrowed heavily from a live action French film. Gaston's analogue in that movie was pretty redeemable for the most part.

"Sorry I punched your brother. Drinks are on me."
"Sorry the advice I gave you cost you your house. I'll work chopping wood until you can afford a new one."
"We gotta rescue Belle from the Beast who has her held captive. Dude's loaded. We should probably rob him while we're at it."

He was still the antagonist, by default mostly, but he had a good attribute for every bad attribute.

I agree with this. That version is one of the best movies ever made, by the way. It's presented as a child's fairy tale, but it's clearly meant for a grown audience, and there's an adult darkness to it that isn't present in the Disney version.

There's also a live action version from Czechoslovakia made in the '70s, which is also great, but even less made for kids, and at times hews closer to horror and even erotica.

Except he doesn't go running to save Belle. When the old man tells him Belle is Beast's hostage, he doesn't believe him, and sees this as an opportunity to "detain the looney" as a bargaining chip to koerce Belle into marrying him.
Belle is free before anyone even thinks the beast is real. She proves he is real solely to have her father freed from Gaston. Belle insists Beast is no threat to the town, but Gaston, upon realising he's been kucked, fear-mongers the town, locks up Bell in cellar, and then goes to kill the monster.

I swear people defending Gaston either don't remember the movie or are literally Titan from Megamind.
