Its all modern normal Japanese with some historical terms sprinkled in (most of which get explained in an in game glossary). Of course certain subjects/vocab etc come up that wouldnt come up in a game with a modern setting but they arent hard to figure out through context. What I would suggest though is look up some basic info about that period of Japanese history (bakumatsu) and some of the major forces in the country at the time as that will help a ton in following the story.
