Dumb scene

Tripping the AT ST with the logs is fine, I take no issue to with that.

Luke and friends fell from a significant height in a net that would have been made using Endor tree fibers.

If the density and gravity were truly significant, we would have seen him explode into a bloody mess and the film would have been called the Fall of Skysplatter.

Wood logs at that velocity assuming approximate earth gravity and something thicc like oak... those logs would crack open an Abrams tank assuming each log was about two and a half tons.

Further, the AT-ST is not heavily armoured in the first place; it's about comparable to an armoured car... maybe a rating of B5 or B6

The side walls of the AT-ST are little more then armour plates with weapons attached to it; there is no cross structural integrity that would allow anyone inside it to survive the impact of two giant logs crushing into it.

It's a scout vehicle. Light, fast, maneuverable. Get in, get out. Enough armor to protect the crew from small arms fire, maybe some light mounted weapons, but not enough for a heavy assault.

I was surprised both by how durable and how fragile glass is; I had the opportunity to spend a few years in a glass factory and seen glass drop and be perfectly fine, then watch a guy take a pair of safety scissors and cut a windshield in half; tempered safety glass is the worst when it explodes.

I've dropped a CorningWare (laminated glass) plate and nothing happened, and I've had a socket fall about 2 feet off a desk and hit a tempered glass scale, which exploded.

I assume the Empire was rather poorly managed if the construction of the Death-star was any indication.

Are you a skilled worker? Are you irreplaceable because you're surrounded by idiots making you the only one who understands your job? Is your direct superior one of those idiots and you just corrected them? If you answered yes then you're about to be killed and another idiot will be promoted to your role.

Are you a skilled worker? Did you just get promoted and your direct superior is now fixing a problem you were afraid to bring up? That's going to draw the attention of your superiors' rivals and they'll sabotage your workplace some other way.

Little things can sometimes do big things. For example, a single well-placed 20mm round from a M61 Vulcan can take out and entire F-22 Raptor, F-35 Lightning or Russia's Su-57. That's up to 120 million damage per round. Out of here. Finished. Rekt.

F=ma.

Assuming a mass of 45kg (about half of what you suggested) and a speed of 7m/s (a conservative estimate assuming some interplay between gravity and wind resistance), that would probably result in something like 32000 Newtons (or 32 kN) of force. Which is about four times as powerful as the average anti-tank round.

...and we're effectively doubling it again if we're hitting from both sides simultaneously.

Considering an AT-ST couldn't possibly have the same level of armor-plating as a modern tank (it would be incredibly impractical to support that much weight on two legs and still be able to maneuver in any useful way), and would be even more likely to give at structural weak points (especially if the Empire contracted their production to the lowest bidder), it seems entirely plausible that swinging logs could smash the hell out of one.

From Mythbusters

Swinging Ewok Log Ram
This was the myth that the Build Team (Grant, Tory and Kari) tackled, and they did so by first devising a steel-reinforced wooden structure that could support two 10,000-pound, 10-foot-long and 5-foot-wide logs swinging towards a target in between with a combined 2 million joules of energy if raised to the proper height for testing.
During their proof of concept test, they were unable to get their preferred 45 angles for each log, and so for the full test, they lowered the logs and target vehicle, reinforced the structure and lengthened the cables suspending the logs. They also used an armored truck with the Imperial emblem to represent an Imperial armored vehicle like an All Terrain Scout Transport. When aimed at the back of the cabin, the logs knocked the truck's side panels off the frame, leading them to declare the myth plausible even though Tory reasoned that such a weapon would be hard to time and aim. As a bonus, they put an Imperial dummy in the driver's seat and targeted the cabin with the logs, dealing heavy damage.

My personal take on it is that the top part of the AT-ST couldn't be heavily armored due to topheaviness. IF it were too topheavy, the AT-ST would have issues keeping balance on terrain.

Also this thing is called the "All Terrain Scout Transport".

This thing is meant for transporting scouts, not heavy combat.

Also, why the bloody hell is the "All Terrain Scout Transporter" a walker? They literally have hovering technology and could make transporters that fly through the air, and be heavier armored due to not having to walk.

It was designed with the same idea in mind as the AT-AT: to terrorize the enemy. They could also provide a more stable gunnery platform than something that's floating in the air. And they would be mostly immune to the effects of weather; a hurricane would wreak havoc on a repulsorlift tank but a walker could remain in operation in much higher winds.

(Ultimately though, the answer is because Lucas thought it looked cool)

I feel like the term "scout transport" is misleading based on what else we see of the Imperial military. Compared to other Imperial vehicles it is on the larger side and is more heavily armed and armoured. It functions more like a front line battle vehicle.

I think the scout part comes into play in that it only really transports a couple of guys and doesn't directly provide or require support. Most larger Imperial vehicles act as troop or cargo transports, or as stationary artillery platforms. While the ATST is basically a bunch of guns on legs. It is free to operate more independently.

But I don't think that should be taken as an indication that it's considered a "light" vehicle. It towers over something like an ATRT or ATPT.

I feel like they would have the technology to prevent that from happening when it's that far in the future.
