They had a new game every year or two until VII (understandable because of the jump to 3D) and still put out a new entry every 3-4 years until XIII and XIV, and now we're going on six years since XV.

14 is the only exception to that.

If I have to guess, they are trying to make sure 16 won't flop after all their terrible choices made 15 hot garbage. Will it work? Eh, who knows?

Square Enix been making lots of bad choices over the last several years (Going all in on NFTs and making Nomura lead three games at once) so I won't be surprised if they somehow ruin 16 anyway.

They've been focusing a bit too much on production values over making a good game most of the time.

Luckily FFVII Remake was good, barring a couple plot fuckeries.

The same thing that happened to every AAA game series.

Just look at the Call Of Duty and Madden series. Now do you want Final Fantasy to release new games every year?

It changed its name to "Bravely" something. Now regular "Final Fantasy" is some sort of offline MMO since like PS2 or so, apart from the two that are actual MMOs.

Oh, I thought you were going to complain about how it went to shit. It's better this way. Less trash from SE stinking up a console.

There's some memorable article/review of FFXIII with a paragraph on how good and polished a random rock looked and that the window dressing had received far more care than the game design.

Apologies. I should've said wannabe MMO's and hallway sims.

X was ok at best.

Old FF games were made with like 4-10 people, up to like 30 by FFVI. Big jump with FFVII, and even bigger jump with FFX. Now they are made by like 100 plus people and have outsourced content etc. aswell as the overwhelming assets they have to create. Its a lot more taxing.

And the biggest problem was Yoichi Wada. He changed SE design philosophy post FFX to sequels. Him and Sakaguchi were at odds and unfortunately Wada won out due to Sakaguchi leaving the company after X-s delay where he resigned from executive position, and the the spirits within where he resigned from the company.

Wada then run the company into the ground trying to get SE to make their own engines rather than use engines like unreal, and it was disastrous for the company. He was responsible for the versus XIII debacle, XIIIs problems and FFXiVs 1.0. He was shitcanned after XIV.

Now the new CEO allows Unreal engine to be used and scrapped the idea that SE will have their own engine, and things are doing a lot better now.

I didnt even know they made 14 twice so no I havent been following it much.

First version was a total flop. It utterly failed and they literally remade the entire game. That's why the new version is called A Realm Reborn. A whole different team I think worked to fix the game and whwn it relaunched it was a new game. It's now rhe most successful mmo in the world

From my understanding it was just a mess with horrid and laggy UI, bad quest design, no dungeons, some weird system that limited the amount of level-ups you could do within a week, and just not enough content to justify it being an MMO to begin with.

I just hope they hurry and finish FFXVI it so their development staff can get to work on Dragon Quest Builders 3.

I went from being a Dragon Quest fan in the early 90s to a Final Fantasy fan. Now I've gone full circle and I prefer the DQ series and spinoff games. I'm looking forward to Dragon Quest Treasures and I hope it does well.

I read that if you played too long, they're cut your exp gain to the point where you'd get none at all
