Apparently the woman driving the Mercedes(The car that caused the crash) was a 37 year old ICU nurse who was intoxicated and angry with her boyfriend. There is a picture of her sitting on a curb after the accident and she doesn't appear to have any significant injuries. Her car was easily going well over 100 MPH. Also read that a baby got ejected from one of the vehicles and landed at the feet of a woman that was pumping gas. This had to be beyond horrific.

I cannot imagine being the car right behind the car that just got wiped out in front of me.

Yeah it's really sad that this happened. I live in LA, so I've driven through that intersection plenty of times.

The street she was coming down was pretty much all down hill, so that probably helped her gain a lot of speed quickly.

Here's what the view looks like a bit further up LA Brea (can't see the intersection because of the curve, but gives a good idea of the elevation)

From the video, people calculated that the car was traveling around 130 MPH. I can see now where it picked up all of that speed.

Its because she was drunk, its been shown that doesnt cause someone to brace for impact, which is actually worse for car crashes and causes more injury.

Then again I got hit by a semi truck, ended up underneath of it, and then got shot out at the dividing wall on the freeway and got up and walked away unscathed. I was sober, but its a fucking hell of an experience that really puts things into perspective.

They're just giving more info on who the driver is. Doesn't seem like an attempt at justification or anything. The part about her being drunk and upset came from the driver's sister and she's definitely trying to make her sister sound more sympathetic with that part. But it takes more than that to expain why the hell she was going so fast.

The drunk driver received a 16-year prison sentence, while the mothers of two of the victims went on to serve as National President and Vice President of the advocacy group Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
