it's been a while since I've seen any of it, but iirc, the space battles in Legend of the Galactic Heroes were pretty grand.

That one Eve online battle with 5000 players and over $700,000 in ships destroyed. As in, real world cost of the ships.

I've only seen a few episodes, since it was never given a western release, so unless you found the right sub group, there was a good chance the translations would be poor quality.

iirc @Kircheis is a fan, and can give a better answer

Okay so my favorite battles from that show were the battle of Marr-Adetta and every battle centered around Iserlohn Fortress. That being said, it actually isn't the grand battles that kept me coming back to this show. It was actually the slower and more philosophical moments that kept drawing me in. My single favorite scene in the entire series is when Yang and Reinhard finally meet face to face for the first time, and they spend a good 8 and a half minutes on discussing their differing ideologies on how society should be governed. Slower moments like that are what make the show truly great in my opinion.
