I don't think frozen 2 is as tightly written as Frozen. I think it needed another pass for the script to be fully worked out.

but

going into frozen 2 I did not expect it to delve into the royal family's sordid past. their grandfather was a power-hungry imperialist and was afraid of the native people's affiliation with magic. Kind of feels like what Hans would have done if he had succeeded in the first movie. So their grandfather betrayed the natives, killing their leader, with the intention to take their land. which disturbed the spirits and froze both parties inside the lost woods until it's resolved.

i think it was bold to make the crux of the movie that their ancestor was a war criminal. I like that anna and elsa's reaction to learning what he did isn't to dwell in guilt or to try to save what they can of his image. they condemn him, and accept the responsibility of fixing what he fucked up.

I think it's a good and unexpected direction for the sequel. I think the movie is choppy from a storytelling perspective, and at times confusing. but I like the core story.
