Yes.

She survived but not for long afterwards.

Also, John Ritter's cause of death. :(

My dad had one six years ago. Fortunately, it happened while he was in the hospital already. He was recovering from a triple bypass surgery when it occurred. His blood pressure suddenly dropped to almost nothing on one side of his body, and then he went unresponsive. Like eight doctors flooded the room barely a minute later and they rushed him off into surgery, asking me to sign the consent form along the way for an emergency procedure.

They managed to save him, but it was an extremely dangerous situation. He was in surgery for over eight hours. He had a stroke as a result of it, which damaged his vision and his cognitive abilities--he still hasn't regained his full sight, and probably never will.

If he hadn't been in a hospital when it happened, he almost certainly would have died.

They still do X-rays every six months or so to check on the repair, but he's holding up pretty well, all things considered.

don't know anyone personally but i work in radiography and have seen a few for myself.

it's pretty sad really. work in healthcare for just a minute and you'll pretty much want to take better care of yourself.

it's bad. i handled a case involving one, and i was most struck by the fact that in the literature i read (at the time - this was a while ago) "an impending sense of doom" was listed as one of the identifying symptoms
