The Wikipedia page shows all sorts of connected titles for the 2015 Secret Wars story, but I found a collected edition with only Secret Wars #1-9. Would the story make much sense, and be a good read, by itself, or would I be better off reading the other titles as well? No spoilers, please.

No, I wouldn't. The tie-ins are mostly just for fun and can be easily skipped, but you really should read Hickman's Avengers/New Avengers run that leads up to it.

It would be the equivalent of watching Avengers Infinity War as your first MCU movie. Sure you can do it and probably get the gist of what's happening, but it wouldn't be a very rewarding experience.

Comic books are like soap operas in that they both Reward long term watchers/readers better than in the short term that way
