After all the shit they pulled before, they were now literally dumping shit on the highways and threatening anyone tasked with cleaning it up...

I have long stopped understanding the actual point. They want concessions, but instead of their protests getting things through to the ones that can change stuff, they are just being idiots and pissing of the entire country.

No idea what foreign news sites would properly cover it, but just search for Dutch Farmers and it should be easily found and you can then pick your newssite of choice.

We were so naive, thinking the biggest stunt they would pull was crashing tractors into the front-door of governmental buildings.

Edit: The entire conflict has a Wikipedia page, so I suppose that works.

I'm not well informed on this, but

> The institute found that farmers were responsible for 46% of the country's nitrogen emission,

Here's the thing, nitrogen is incredibly valuable... it's like complaining the farmers are emitting too much gold.

Except under new guidelines, an upper limit has been set for nitrogen emissions.

"Too much" is never a good thing.

I do rarely type out swears and when speaking Dutch, I tend to use rare or old-fashioned ones.

I also would not really qualify any of the language I used in the opening post as heavy swearing.

I didn't say heavy swearing

Putting restrictions on farmers in the middle of a global food crisis. Pure genius.

This has been dragging on for several years now.

And more insanity today. more dumpings (apparently including asbestos), blocking highways by means of holding a BBQ, even seeing photos depicting children being used as human shields.... And it seems they are now even threatening the life of the one chamber member, who's entire party and image is about farmer politics...

Now with the police complaining they are underpowered for this, I can only wonder how long it will take before it escalates and the army or mp are brought in.

Farmers should be treated better but they should also not act like assholes. I have a milpa-based garden and rarely need to buy veggies.

Exactly, live and let live.

Protesting is important, but it really should not affect "outsiders" too much, as that will just sway the public opinion against you.

From what I can actually gather, it is a maximum emission value per country, based on the country's surface area. Without taking into account that a country like the Netherlands has disproportionately many farm lands for its size compared to other EU countries. Basically they got the right idea, limiting nitrogen emissions, but are using the wrong distribution patterns for emissions. This simply is the kind of problem, where if you want to tackle it as a Union, it has to be handled on the Union level, not on a country by country basis.

What's sad is this problem can be wholly solved by trapping and exporting the nitrogen for sale... if only ammonia labs were legal for farmers.
