A Sonoma County theater is under fire for hosting controversial comedian Dave Chappelle.

Members of the LGBTQ+ community started a petition demanding that the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts cancel plans to host Chappelle, who has come under fire for his jokes aimed at transgender people.

"His brand of comedy has been particularly hurtful to the trans community," said Jennifer Rihl with Translife Sonoma County. "Were an important part of this community. We feel like this is kind of a slap in the face to us from the Luther Burbank Center."

As of Tuesday evening, more than 500 people had signed the petition urging the Luther Burbank Center to relocate the show.

"Knowing that the [Luther Burbank Center] is hosting Dave Chappelle and other people like him does not make me feel safe in Sonoma County," petition organizer Joy Anderson said. "It does not make me feel valued or respected or cared for."

In a statement, the Luther Burbank Center said it has carefully considered the concerns, but, "In the end, we determined it is not our role to censor, particularly from an organization renting our facility and one that provides diverse artists."

Im getting to the point I just don't care what's going on with Dave Chappelle anymore. He's just being used for outrage and is leaning into being used for outrage. Nothing will change. He will continue to do comedy and everyone will continue to pretend they're stopping him somehow while he keeps getting money because they're not who is supporting him anyway. They're actually just helping him get support from the people who hate them and are ultimately making him more money.

I don't really have an answer for how to stop someone either. Nor do I know if Id want to. I think someone like Chappelle is a waste of time when there's so many people actually in control of laws that actively hurt people in deeper cutting ways. He feels like a distraction at this point. Like I said, you're just making him more money through the free publicity. People will want to see him and see what people are so mad about. So it's a distraction that is also profitable.

It's a loud minority that's wasting their time on it and tons of people on the left are still fans. The reason you can't stop him is because asking to start censoring comedy is a tough ask for most people overall. It doesn't really matter what the technicalities or the level of offensiveness behind it are. That's why Netflix didn't do shit and they literally just nominated him for an Emmy.

Add in that there's already history with evangelicals and the like trying this in the 90s/00s. Once again, technicalities don't really matter. The perception is that people want comedy censored and they use similar tactics as the last groups that tried.

What the protestors were doing to people in line last week with the First Avenue show is gonna alienate and push people away instead of helping.

I actually don't even think Im for censoring comedy myself. Cause it's a slippery slope and soon people will try to censor people that they just don't care to even attempt to understand or watch the context.

But Im 100% for calling out shady people doing shady shit. And Dave Chappelle felt like people were doing him shady, left comedy and came back to do the shady shit to a different community.

He got all sensitive when he wasn't immediately accepted by the trans community (which no one actually cared that much about his few jokes, just the regular amount of backlash everyone gets) and pushed them away harder by obsessively talking about them in The Closer while declaring he was with the people who spew a bunch of hateful shit and have nothing to do with comedy.

Anyone who couldn't see he was taking a hard stance is an idiot that was easily manipulated by his story at the end that had everything to do with her being a comedian and nothing to do with her being a trans person. The only time it was relevant she was trans in his bit is when he wanted to paint the trans community as hateful by highlighting that some of them are toxic, just like any big community. He made 45 mins of jokes on the trans community and ended it by trying to convince people that most the trans community was toxic and would push people to suicide if they didn't do what they wanted. All while using his dead friend as a shield from potential backlash
